What does a digital asset manager do in a museum?

A Digital Asset Manager in a museum is responsible for organizing, cataloging, and maintaining the museum's digital assets, such as images, videos, audio files, and documents. They ensure that these assets are easily accessible to staff, researchers, and sometimes the public, while also safeguarding them for long-term preservation. Their role often includes implementing digital asset management (DAM) systems, establishing metadata standards, and training staff in best practices. They collaborate across departments to support exhibitions, marketing, and educational initiatives that rely on digital content.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital asset manager in a museum?

To thrive as a Digital Asset Manager in a museum, you need expertise in digital asset management, metadata standards, and information organization, often supported by a degree in library science, information management, or a related field. Familiarity with digital asset management systems (DAMS), content management systems (CMS), and relevant software like Adobe Creative Suite is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for coordinating with curators and other departments. These skills ensure the efficient preservation, accessibility, and integrity of the museum’s digital collections, supporting both internal workflows and public engagement.

How does a digital asset manager collaborate with curators and exhibition teams in a museum setting?

A Digital Asset Manager in a museum works closely with curators and exhibition teams to ensure that digital files—such as images, videos, and documentation—are accurately catalogued, easily accessible, and properly licensed for use in exhibits and publications. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to discuss project needs, setting up metadata standards, and providing training on digital asset management systems. Effective communication and a strong understanding of both technical systems and curatorial requirements are key to supporting successful exhibitions and long-term digital preservation.
