The Diabetes Research Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Dietitian 1 (H) position. The incumbent coordinates, plans, and conducts programs to educate patients about nutrition. Additionally, the Clinical Dietitian administers medical nutrition therapy and advises food service operations for assigned facilities. The Clinical Dietitian provides nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy to patients in order to further their medical and personal goals. The Clinical Dietitian is a member of the Diabetes Education Team and will support and collaborate with the Senior Clinical Dietitian and the Nurse Educator.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Plans menus and inspects food to ensure portions adhere to set restrictions and dietary standards.

  • Assesses patients’ nutritional status and develops individualized nutritional plans.

  • Relays appropriate information regarding patient care to the collaborating physician.

  • Assists in managing family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patients’ care.

  • Triages patients to determine the urgency of physician evaluation.

  • Documents and reports care in an accurate and timely fashion.

  • Collaborates with the development of educational materials.

  • Identifies and accounts for specific ethnic, cultural, and religious needs.

  • Responds to, resolves, and follows up regarding patient inquiries or concerns.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition from an accredited university or college program required; master’s degree preferred

  • Current/valid FL Dietitian license required

  • Active FL Registered Dietitian status

  • Certified Diabetes Educator or eligible to sit for exam within 24 months of hire

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

DRI CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

· Responsible for undertaking nutrition and diabetes self-management assessment and counseling of patients in individual and group settings

· Confers with education team, physicians and other healthcare professionals to coordinate medical and nutritional needs of patients.

· Assesses the nutritional needs of patients and develops and implements nutritional care plans.

· Documents the nutritional status and needs of outpatients using established standards of care and practice guidelines.

· Initiates and follows patients for nutrient intake analysis and makes recommendations for continuance progression or initiation of alternate therapies.

· Serves as a clinical nutrition resource and subject matter expert to physicians, patients, and staff.

· Participates in departmental performance improvement activities and training.

· Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition from an accredited university or college program; master’s degree preferred

Certification and Licensing:

  • Current/valid FL Dietitian license required

  • Certified Diabetes Educator or eligible to sit for exam within 24 months of hire

Experience:

· Minimum 3 years of relevant experience preferred

Department Specific Functions:

Patient assessment & education in disease management (75%)

· Provide nutritional assessment to patients with diabetes and associated disorders, including medical nutrition therapy, carbohydrate counting and weight management

· For those patients with diabetes, assess, implement and document diabetes self-management skills, referring to and liaising with the diabetes nurse educator and senior clinical dietitian as required.

· Participate and support in community-based diabetes and weight loss programs

· Assist in the development and implementation of the “Mastering Your Diabetes” program (a DRI based diabetes self-management program held quarterly, including weekends)

· Provide nutritional and diabetes self-management assessment and counseling for adults and pediatric patients with diabetes and associated disorders

· Obtain or maintain CDE status to provide diabetes education for both adult and pediatric patients, encompassing the American Diabetes Association National Standards of DSME and demonstrate knowledge of glucose monitoring, pattern recognition, evaluation of physician determined insulin algorithms and insulin pump therapy etc.

· Develop knowledge and training of insulin Pumps and glucose monitors.
