What are some common challenges that DHS Data Engineers face when working with sensitive government data?

DHS Data Engineers often encounter challenges related to handling and securing sensitive data, including adhering to strict privacy regulations and security protocols. They must ensure data integrity and compliance with federal standards, which may require additional steps in data processing and storage. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as cybersecurity and legal departments, is common to maintain compliance. Additionally, managing legacy systems and integrating them with modern data infrastructure can be complex and time-consuming.

Are data engineers still in demand?

Data engineers are currently in high demand due to the increasing need for managing large data systems, building data pipelines, and supporting analytics and machine learning initiatives. Skills in cloud platforms, programming, and database management enhance job prospects in this field.

Does the DHS pay well?

DHS Data Engineers typically receive competitive salaries that align with federal government pay scales, which are based on experience, education, and location. They often include benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave, making the overall compensation package attractive for qualified candidates with skills in data management and cloud platforms.

What are DHS Data Engineers?

DHS Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data systems and infrastructure for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Their work involves collecting, processing, and organizing large volumes of data to support security operations and decision-making. They typically work with databases, data pipelines, and cloud platforms to ensure data is accessible, reliable, and secure. DHS Data Engineers often collaborate with data analysts, scientists, and IT specialists to ensure the efficient use of data across the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DHS Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DHS Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and programming languages such as Python or SQL, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data platforms (e.g., Hadoop, Spark), cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure), and relevant certifications like Certified Data Engineer are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel when collaborating with cross-functional teams and addressing complex data challenges. These skills are essential to ensure secure, efficient data management and support critical decision-making within DHS operations.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior data engineers, including those working with large-scale data systems and advanced analytics, can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, specialized skills in cloud platforms, and leadership roles. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options in high-growth companies or tech firms.

What is the difference between Dhs Data Engineer vs Data Analyst?

We provide high quality resources for a wide range of IT and security solutions at best-value pricing. Our success is built on a solid foundation of well-vetted, highly technical personnel, a disciplined project management approach, and an overarching commitment to customer service. We develop, test, deploy, and support exceptional solutions that enhance system functionality, while maximizing reliability and availability, and ensure the tightest security.ย
Job Overview

XPECT Solutions is seeking a Solutions Architect to support our Federal Government Customer with delivering secure, cloud-based mission systems. The Architect will lead the design of scalable data platforms and processing pipelines, translating mission requirements into reference architectures that balance performance, cost, and security. This role spans the full solution lifecycle - from whiteboard design through implementation guidance - and partners closely with data engineering, DevSecOps, and security teams to ensure solutions meet federal compliance requirements (NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, DHS 4300A). The ideal candidate is technically hands-on across Python, Spark/PySpark, and SQL, fluent in storage and compute optimization trade-offs, and able to communicate architectural decisions clearly to both engineers and government stakeholders.
As a Hybrid position, there is an onsite requirement of one day per week.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design end-to-end solution architectures for secure, cloud-based data platforms supporting federal mission workloads, including data ingestion, processing, storage, and analytics layers.
  • Develop reference architectures, design patterns, and architectural decision records (ADRs) that guide engineering teams and ensure consistency across the program.
  • Architect distributed data processing pipelines using Spark and PySpark, defining partitioning, caching, and resource strategies to optimize throughput and cost.
  • Lead database design and data modeling efforts for relational and analytical workloads, including schema design, indexing strategy, and SQL performance tuning.
  • Define storage and compute optimization strategies - tiering, right-sizing, autoscaling, and workload placement - to balance performance against budget constraints.
  • Collaborate with DevSecOps to embed security and compliance controls (NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, DHS 4300A) into architectural designs and CI/CD workflows using GitHub, Jenkins/CloudBees, Ansible, Terraform, and Vault.
  • Conduct architectural reviews, design trade-off analyses, and proof-of-concept evaluations to validate solutions before full implementation.
  • Produce architecture documentation, diagrams, and technical briefings tailored to engineering, security, and government stakeholder audiences.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, guiding implementation decisions and resolving complex design issues.
  • Partner with program leadership to assess emerging technologies, evaluate vendor offerings, and recommend roadmap investments aligned to mission needs.

Requirements
  • Must Be Able to Obtain Public Trust Level 6C
  • Six (6) years of Information Assurance experience
  • Experience with the following technologies:
    • Python
    • Spark
    • PySpark
    • SQL and Database Implementation
    • Data Engineering and Data Pipelines
    • Storage and Compute Optimization
    • GitHub
    • Jenkins/Cloudbees
    • Ansible
    • Terraform
    • Vault

Preferred Additional Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
