What is DevOps and what do DevOps engineers do?

DevOps is a set of practices that combines software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to shorten the software development lifecycle and deliver high-quality applications continuously. DevOps engineers collaborate with developers and IT staff to automate, integrate, and monitor processes, focusing on continuous integration, continuous delivery, and infrastructure as code. Their responsibilities include managing deployment pipelines, automating infrastructure provisioning, ensuring system reliability, and facilitating communication between teams. By improving collaboration and automating workflows, DevOps engineers help organizations deliver software faster and more reliably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Engineer, you need a solid background in software development and IT operations, typically supported by experience with automation, scripting, and cloud platforms. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, and cloud services like AWS or Azure, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer), is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and communication skills set outstanding DevOps professionals apart. These competencies are crucial for streamlining development pipelines, ensuring reliable deployments, and fostering effective collaboration between development and operations teams.

What Is Devops?

DevOps refers to a combination of philosophies, tools, and practices that help to promote an organization's ability to deliver applications and services quickly while improving products at an increased speed over companies that use traditional software development. The increased speed assists organizations in better serving their clients and customers and therefore compete more effectively in the market. Essentially, this model puts development and operations teams together so that engineers can work through the lifecycle of an application and not feel saddled into a single function or skill set. This helps to ensure quality applications and increase development speeds.

What are some common challenges DevOps professionals face when integrating new tools into existing workflows?

DevOps professionals often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between new tools and legacy systems, resistance to change from team members, and ensuring proper security configurations. Successful integration requires thorough testing, clear documentation, and close collaboration with development and operations teams. Addressing these challenges can lead to smoother deployments and more efficient workflows, making adaptability and strong communication skills essential in this role.

What is the difference between Devops vs System Administrator?

AspectDevopsSystem Administrator
Required credentialsCertifications like AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, LinuxCertifications like CompTIA Linux+, Microsoft Certified
Work environmentCollaborative, development-focused teams, often AgileOperational, maintenance-focused, on-premises or cloud
Employer usageTech companies, startups, cloud service providersEnterprises, data centers, IT departments
Common search intentAutomation, CI/CD, cloud deploymentServer management, network setup, troubleshooting

Devops and System Administrators share overlapping skills in Linux, scripting, and cloud platforms. However, Devops focuses on automating development and deployment processes, while System Administrators primarily manage and maintain IT infrastructure. Both roles are essential in modern IT environments but serve different operational purposes.

Job description

Who We Are

KEV builds mission-critical financial software for K12 schools across North America. Our platform provides real-time visibility and control over how funds are collected and managed, replacing fragmented workflows with secure, modern systems that schools rely on every day.

Trusted by more than 27,000 K12 schools managing over $8B annually, KEV delivers mission-critical software for payments, accounting, and reporting, where reliability and security matter.  Headquartered in Toronto with teams across North America, we are scaling quickly and investing deeply in cloud-native, data-driven technology.

KEV is a place for people who care about building durable software at scale and doing work that has real impact in public education. We focus on solving hard problems, raising the bar on engineering craft, and building products that earn long-term trust from the communities we serve.

This role is for an active vacancy.

About the Role

At KEV, our engineering teams build and operate mission-critical SaaS platforms that support more than 27,000 K12 schools and over 1 million users across North America. Our systems process and manage high volumes of financial transactions every day, operating at scale in a domain where reliability, security, and correctness are non-negotiable.

We are hiring a DevOps to help design, evolve, and scale the core systems that power KEV's financial platform. In this role, you will work across frontend and backend services to deliver secure, high-performance software that supports complex financial workflows. You will contribute to architectural decisions, system design, and platform evolution as KEV continues to grow.

This role requires deep experience building and operating SaaS software at scale. You will design systems that remain reliable under real-world load, handle sensitive financial data with care, and support distributed architectures as usage grows. You will collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Engineering peers to translate real school needs into scalable, durable solutions that earn long-term trust.

How You Will Contribute

Enable Reliable Application Deployments
Work closely with development teams to understand project requirements and manage application builds across environments, ensuring smooth, timely, and low-risk releases. Maintain clear environment alignment to support predictable deployment outcomes.

Environment Architecture & Configuration Management
Create and maintain detailed environment diagrams for each application, ensuring correct configuration, system integration, and consistency across development, staging, and production environments.

Automation & Infrastructure as Code
Apply automation, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles to improve deployment reliability, reduce manual intervention, and minimize downtime across releases.

Release Pipeline Governance (Azure DevOps)
Oversee and manage release pipelines in Azure DevOps, including monitoring builds, approving releases, tracking version integrity, and ensuring compliance with operational standards.

Operational Excellence & Post-Deployment Support
Provide ongoing support after deployment by troubleshooting production issues, gathering feedback, and implementing improvements to enhance application stability and performance. Participate in incident response and on-call rotations to ensure rapid resolution.

Infrastructure Optimization
Research, plan, and implement infrastructure enhancements such as server configurations, load balancing, and proxy setups to improve system performance and scalability.

Documentation & Process Discipline
Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for deployments, configuration changes, and troubleshooting processes to ensure transparency, auditability, and effective cross-team communication.

Incident & Project Management
Lead and coordinate projects and incident investigations through an IT ticketing system, partnering with development and support teams to drive timely and structured resolutions.

Who You Are

  • 3-5 years of experience in application support with a strong background in utilizing DevOps practices, particularly within the Microsoft Azure ecosystem and Azure DevOps.
  • Post-secondary degree, diploma, or equivalent technical certification in a relevant field. Microsoft Certifications are a strong asset.
  • Prior experience in SaaS support and delivery, with a focus on both IaaS and PaaS solutions within Azure environments using Azure DevOps, Octopus, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code, particularly as it relates to configuring and managing Azure-based systems with ARM, Bicep and/or Terraform.
  • Solid understanding of security principles in complex ecosystems and proficiency with debugging and diagnostic tools to resolve application issues effectively.
  • Ability to automate common tasks with PowerShell, PowerAutomate, Azure Functions.
  • Experience managing traditional server-based environments, including SFTP, IIS and SQL Server, as well as supporting third-party and in-house applications.
  • Excellent communication skills for clear and effective collaboration with developers, management, and technical teams.
  • Configuration hardening against standards such as NIST, STIG's, CIS Benchmarks, etc.
  • Working in a regulated environment like PCI, SOC II, ISO27001, HIPAA, HITRUST, etc.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to investigating, troubleshooting, and resolving application issues.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation - We believe in rewarding great work with fair, competitive pay.
  • Meaningful benefits- Because your well-being matters; both at work and at home.
  • Retirement Savings Support - We help you plan for your future with company-matched programs, including RRSP matching in Canada and 401(k) contributions in the U.S.
  • Professional development - We invest in your growth with ongoing learning, stretch opportunities, and continuing education, including KEV Academy for onboarding and skill-building, plus KEV University, our online platform offering a wide range of courses.
  • Hybrid model - 3 days in the office to collaborate and connect, with flexibility the rest of the week.
  • Flexible PTO - Take the time you need to recharge with close to 4 weeks of vacation and a company-wide holiday closure
  •  Office perks - Enjoy a fully stocked snack bar and occasional catered lunches-because we know that great conversations (and ideas) often start around good food.

Salary Range - $100,000-150,000

Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including skills, depth of work experience and relevant licenses/credentials, and may vary from the amounts listed above.
