What is a Devops Scrum master?

A DevOps Scrum Master is a hybrid role that combines Agile Scrum leadership with DevOps principles to improve collaboration, automation, and continuous delivery in software development. They facilitate Agile ceremonies, remove obstacles, and ensure seamless communication between development, operations, and QA teams. Unlike a traditional Scrum Master, they also focus on CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and cloud infrastructure. Their goal is to enhance agility while maintaining DevOps efficiency to accelerate product delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Devops Scrum master?

To thrive as a DevOps Scrum Master, you need a blend of expertise in agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and strong organizational skills, often supported by certifications like Certified Scrum Master (CSM) or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, automation tools, and version control systems is highly valuable. Excellent facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills help foster collaboration within cross-functional teams. These capabilities are essential for driving continuous improvement, accelerating software delivery, and ensuring team alignment on project goals.

What are some common challenges faced by Devops Scrum masters, and how can they be addressed?

DevOps Scrum Masters often encounter challenges such as balancing agile practices with fast-paced delivery demands, managing cross-team dependencies, and facilitating collaboration between development and operations. Successfully addressing these issues involves fostering a culture of continuous feedback, maintaining clear communication channels, and proactively identifying bottlenecks in processes. Utilizing agile ceremonies and DevOps automation tools can help streamline workflows and improve transparency across the team. Over time, strong leadership and a commitment to ongoing learning enable DevOps Scrum Masters to drive both team performance and project success.

Are Devops Scrum Masters being phased out?

Devops Scrum Masters remain in demand as organizations adopt Agile and DevOps practices to improve software delivery. Their role focuses on facilitating collaboration, implementing automation tools, and ensuring continuous integration and deployment, which are critical in modern IT environments. While specific job requirements may evolve, the need for skilled Scrum Masters with DevOps knowledge continues to be relevant.

Is a Devops Scrum Master still in demand?

Devops Scrum Masters are currently in demand as organizations seek professionals who can facilitate agile practices, improve deployment pipelines, and manage collaboration between development and operations teams. Skills in automation tools, cloud platforms, and Agile methodologies enhance job prospects in this role.

Overall Job Purpose

The Senior Manager Delivery Lead is accountable for predictable, secure, high-quality delivery execution across one or more pods, complex initiatives, or multiple workstreams. This role drives delivery discipline, planning, and transparency at a broader scope—translating priorities into achievable delivery forecasts, managing cross-team dependencies, and ensuring delivery outcomes align to agreed scope, timing, and quality expectations. This is an influence-based, delivery-accountable role.

Key Accountabilities

  • Own end-to-end delivery execution across assigned scope, ensuring committed work is delivered predictably, safely, and in line with agreed objectives and quality expectations.
  • Translate priorities into delivery plans, sequencing, and forecasts; surface constraints early and drive timely decisions and trade-offs.
  • Establish and maintain delivery cadence and lightweight governance (planning, checkpoints, metrics review), improving predictability and flow over time.
  • Proactively manage delivery risks, dependencies, and impediments across pods, platforms, and partners; drive resolution and structured escalation where required.
  • Provide consistent delivery visibility (status, milestones, risks, forecast, dependency health) to stakeholders and enterprise partners.
  • Partner with enterprise stakeholders (Risk, InfoSec, Compliance, Privacy) to ensure delivery includes operational readiness, control alignment, and launch/transition planning.
  • Support delivery resource stewardship by contributing to estimation, capacity planning, vendor coordination, and delivery cost awareness within established guardrails.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, learning-oriented delivery culture aligned with ways of working and IGM values.
  • Participate in relevant chapter activities by sharing standards, tools, templates, and lessons learned to support consistent delivery practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or equivalent experience); advanced degree is an asset.
  • 7–10 years of progressive experience in technology delivery/program execution across complex initiatives.
  • Delivery planning and forecasting (milestones, sequencing, and delivery health).
  • Cross-team dependency, risk, and issue management using influence and structured escalation.
  • Stakeholder communication and transparency (status, risks, decisions, and trade-offs).

Preferred

  • Experience within the financial services industry, including banking, wealth management, insurance, or asset management environments.
  • Experience working with or supporting delivery involving:
    • Salesforce
    • SAP Data Platform (including SAP data management and analytics capabilities)
    • Salesforce Marketing Cloud
  • Experience working in a product operating model or pod-based delivery environment.
  • Proven success working with geographically dispersed and cross-functional teams, coordinating across multiple regions and time zones.
  • Agile certification (e.g., Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), or PSM) is considered an asset

The expected annual base salary range for this role is $110,000 - $135,000, which is determined based on skills, knowledge and experience and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for annual short-term incentive, health and well-being benefits, retirement and savings plan, paid time off and career development.

Benefits

  • COMPETITIVE COMPENSATION & RECOGNITION: competitive base salary, performance-weighted bonus, education/career support, option to join Employee Share Purchase Plan with employer matching component.
  • EMPLOYEE BENEFITS & INSURANCE: competitive health and dental coverage, flexible plan for you and your family and short-term & long-term disability plans.
  • RETIREMENT SAVINGS PROGRAMS: voluntary Group RRSP enrolment with employer matching component.
  • WORK LIFE BALANCE: paid volunteer days, competitive time off including 10 wellness days off, WorkPerks discount program, hybrid & flex work arrangements.
  • INCLUSIVE CULTURE AND DIVERSITY: living our core values: Be a Team, Be Accountable, Be Better, engaging with community through Business Resource Groups (BRG communities are volunteer employee-led groups formed around a common interest, identity, or background).

IGM is a diverse workplace committed to doing business inclusively - this starts with having a representative workforce! We encourage applications from all qualified candidates that represent the diversity present across Canada – including racialized persons, women, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, 2SLGBTQIA+ community, gender diverse and neurodiverse individuals, as well as all who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
