What is a DevOps Automation Engineer?

A DevOps Automation Engineer is a technology professional responsible for automating software development, deployment, and infrastructure management processes. They bridge the gap between development and operations teams by implementing tools and practices that streamline workflows, improve reliability, and enable continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD). Their work often involves scripting, configuring cloud services, managing version control, and ensuring efficient and secure software delivery pipelines.

What are some common challenges faced by DevOps Automation Engineers when integrating new tools into existing CI/CD pipelines?

DevOps Automation Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new tools and legacy systems, managing configuration drift, and maintaining pipeline stability during integration. It's crucial to thoroughly test new tools in a staging environment before deploying to production to minimize disruptions. Additionally, effective documentation and collaboration with development, QA, and operations teams help streamline the integration process and address any cross-team dependencies.

What is the difference between Devops Automation Engineer vs Cloud Engineer?

AspectDevops Automation EngineerCloud Engineer
Primary FocusAutomating deployment, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as codeDesigning, implementing, and managing cloud infrastructure and services
Skills & CertificationsDevOps tools (Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes), scripting, CI/CD, LinuxCloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), cloud architecture, security
Work EnvironmentDevOps teams, software development environmentsCloud service environments, infrastructure teams
Industry UsageSoftware development, IT operationsCloud service providers, enterprise IT

While both roles involve cloud and automation skills, a Devops Automation Engineer primarily focuses on automating software deployment and infrastructure processes, whereas a Cloud Engineer concentrates on designing and managing cloud infrastructure. The roles often overlap but serve different core functions within IT and development teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Automation Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development, system administration, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) principles, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in IT or computer science. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), as well as certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, are typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you bridge gaps between development and operations teams. These skills ensure efficient deployment pipelines, increased system reliability, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing technical environments.

Job description

The DevOps Engineer works on the Automation Team and partners with the Lead DevOps Engineer to design, build, support, and continuously improve secure, reliable, and efficient software delivery capabilities across development teams. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on CI/CD pipelines, release tooling, developer enablement, and automation practices that improve delivery speed, consistency, quality, and compliance across the software delivery lifecycle. This role also contributes to engineering workflow enablement through automation, integration, and configuration within Jira and related delivery platforms. DevOps engineering and delivery automation are the primary focus of the position; Jira administration support is secondary and provided as needed to help improve the end-to-end flow of work from code creation through release.

Working closely with application teams, QA, Infrastructure, Security, and delivery stakeholders, this role helps reduce manual effort, improve tool adoption, and enable scalable, compliant, and efficient engineering practices across the enterprise.

Practices safety-conscious behaviors in all operational processes and procedures.
Essential Functions
DevOps Automation and Delivery Engineering
  •  Design, build, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines that support automated build, test, security scanning, release, and deployment workflows.
  • Create, enhance, and support reusable automation components, scripts, templates, and engineering patterns that improve consistency and reduce manual effort across teams and applications.
  • Support release processes, deployment coordination, and environment-related delivery activities in partnership with development, QA, Infrastructure, and Security teams.
  • Contribute to the standardization and continuous improvement of software delivery practices, tooling, and controls across the enterprise.
Engineering Workflow Tooling and Jira Enablement
  • Build and improve workflow automation, integrations, and configuration within Jira and related delivery platforms to support traceability, release readiness, flow efficiency, and engineering team productivity.
  • Support delivery teams in improving work management workflows, release tracking, and tooling usage standards through automation, scripting, APIs, and platform capabilities.
  • Provide secondary support for Jira and related delivery tools, including workflow updates, project setup, board and dashboard configuration, reporting, permissions coordination, and general platform support as needed.
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues and recommend practical improvements that reduce friction and improve day-to-day delivery effectiveness.
Engineering Enablement and Operational Excellence
  • Support the integration of code quality, testing, security, and compliance checks into delivery workflows and build pipelines.
  • Monitor build, release, and tooling health; troubleshoot issues; perform root cause analysis; and implement durable improvements.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, standards, and knowledge-sharing materials that improve adoption of effective DevOps, automation, and engineering enablement practices.
Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
  • Partner with the Lead DevOps Engineer and delivery stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and implement automation and tooling improvements.
  • Work collaboratively with developers, testers, analysts, product owners, and other technology partners to understand delivery pain points and recommend practical solutions.
  • Provide hands-on guidance, training, and cross-functional support to help teams adopt new automation patterns, delivery standards, and tool capabilities.
  • Participate in cross-training and provide support across automation team functions as needed to strengthen overall team capability and resilience.
