What is device testing?

Device testing is the process of evaluating electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, or hardware components, to ensure they function correctly and meet quality standards. This includes checking for hardware defects, software compatibility, performance, safety, and user experience. Device testers use specialized tools and testing protocols to identify issues and report them for resolution before the product reaches consumers. The goal is to deliver reliable, safe, and high-quality devices to the market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a device testing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Device Testing Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electronics, test methodologies, and quality assurance, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with testing tools like oscilloscopes, multimeters, automated test equipment, and knowledge of standards such as ISO or IEC certifications are commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong problem-solving skills help set top performers apart in identifying and resolving device issues. These skills ensure the reliability, safety, and performance of products before they reach the market.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in device testing roles and how can they be overcome?

Professionals in device testing often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies, ensuring compatibility across various platforms, and identifying subtle or intermittent device malfunctions. To overcome these hurdles, it's important to stay updated on new testing tools and methodologies, collaborate closely with development and QA teams, and maintain detailed documentation of test cases and results. Building strong communication skills and adopting a proactive approach to learning can also help address these challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Device Testing vs Quality Assurance Tester?

AspectDevice TestingQuality Assurance Tester
CertificationsRelevant certifications like ISTQB, ISTQB Mobile TestingISTQB, Certified Software Tester (CSTE)
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, development teams, hardware and software environmentsOffice settings, testing environments, project teams
Industry UsageElectronics, mobile devices, hardware manufacturersSoftware companies, app development, software products
Primary FocusTesting specific devices for functionality, compatibility, and performanceEnsuring overall quality, process adherence, and defect tracking

Device Testing focuses on evaluating specific hardware or device functionalities, often involving physical testing of devices. Quality Assurance Testers have a broader role in verifying overall software quality, processes, and defect management. While both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, Device Testing is more hardware-centric, whereas QA Testers focus on software quality assurance across projects.

Do device testers get paid well?

Device testers typically earn wages that are comparable to entry-level tech or quality assurance roles, with pay varying based on experience, location, and company. Some testers can earn higher salaries with specialized skills, certifications, or by working for larger organizations, but overall, the pay is generally considered moderate within the tech industry.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Oracle WMS Lead Consultant to lead the design, configuration, implementation, testing, and deployment of Oracle Fusion Cloud Warehouse Management for a global Automotive Tier 1 supplier. The consultant will implement warehouse and plant-logistics capabilities supporting high-volume receiving, inventory control, replenishment, kitting, line-side supply, picking, packing, shipping, customer compliance, and traceability. The role requires strong Oracle WMS expertise and hands-on knowledge of automotive warehousing, OEM delivery expectations, JIT/JIS fulfillment, returnable containers, and plant material-flow operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead WMS discovery workshops covering receiving, quality inspection, putaway, storage, replenishment, picking, packing, shipping, inventory control, cycle counting, returns, and warehouse exception processes.
  • Document current-state and future-state warehouse and plant-logistics processes for raw materials, work-in-process, finished goods, service parts, returnable containers, and customer shipments.
  • Configure Oracle Fusion WMS capabilities for facilities, locations, zones, location types, item attributes, inventory controls, RF/mobile transactions, warehouse tasking, directed putaway, replenishment, allocation, waving, picking, packing, loading, and shipping.
  • Design RF/mobile, barcode, handheld-device, scanning, printer, and warehouse-user processes.
  • Define inventory-control processes for lots, serial numbers, revisions, LPNs, containers, quality status, quarantine, damaged inventory, FIFO/FEFO, traceability, and stock adjustments.
  • Design automotive-specific warehouse processes including line-side replenishment, Kanban, milk runs, cross-docking, sequencing, kitting, consolidation, returnable-container handling, and JIT/JIS fulfillment.
  • Partner with Order Management, Inventory, Manufacturing, Procurement, Transportation, EDI, and PaaS teams to enable end-to-end pick-pack-ship and shipment-confirmation processes.
  • Define warehouse exception processes for shortages, damaged material, failed scans, mis-picks, substitutions, labeling errors, late orders, split shipments, and premium-freight situations.
  • Support data migration for warehouse master data, facilities, locations, zones, items, inventory balances, lot/serial records, LPNs, and open transactions.
  • Develop process maps, configuration workbooks, test scripts, training materials, cutover plans, hypercare procedures, and warehouse operating procedures.
  • Lead SIT, UAT, device testing, integration testing, peak-volume testing, shipping compliance testing, and go-live readiness activities.
  • Support command-center operations and post-go-live optimization.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of warehouse-management or warehouse-execution implementation experience.
  • 3+ years of Oracle Fusion Cloud WMS implementation or support experience.
  • Strong functional knowledge of receiving, putaway, replenishment, wave planning, allocation, picking, packing, loading, shipping, cycle counting, and inventory control.
  • Experience configuring warehouse master data, facility structures, locations, zones, tasking, RF/mobile processes, inventory statuses, and exception-management processes.
  • Automotive OEM, Tier 1 supplier, plant-logistics, sequencing-center, or JIT/JIS warehouse experience.
  • Experience with returnable packaging, dunnage, racks, container loops, line-side supermarkets, and Kanban replenishment.
  • Experience integrating WMS with Oracle Inventory, Order Management, Manufacturing, Procurement, Transportation, and external material-handling or print systems.
  • Strong knowledge of barcodes, RF scanning, lot/serial traceability, containerization, label printing, and warehouse performance metrics.
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing, automotive, industrial manufacturing, consumer products, or complex distribution operations.
  • Strong workshop facilitation, process-design, testing, training, and operational-support skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 75% within the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AS/RS, conveyors, warehouse-control systems, pick-to-light, voice picking, RFID, AMRs, or other automation technologies.
