APluscare Behavioral Health is dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities through compassionate care, individualized services, and programs that promote independence, creativity, and personal growth. Our Day Habilitation programs provide meaningful opportunities for participants to develop skills, build confidence, and express themselves through a variety of enriching activities.

We are currently seeking a creative and compassionate Art Instructor to lead engaging art activities that promote creativity, self-expression, and skill development for individuals participating in our Day Habilitation program.

Position Summary

The Day Habilitation Art Instructor is responsible for developing and leading creative art programs designed to encourage artistic expression, skill development, and personal growth for individuals with developmental disabilities. The instructor will provide both individual and group instruction using a variety of artistic techniques and mediums while fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

Art Program Development

  • Design and implement engaging art programs tailored to the abilities and interests of participants.
  • Plan lessons that incorporate a variety of artistic techniques, mediums, and styles including drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media.
  • Adapt instructional strategies to accommodate different learning styles and ability levels.

Instruction and Participant Engagement

  • Provide both individual and group instruction in basic art techniques.
  • Guide participants in developing their artistic skills while encouraging creativity and self-expression.
  • Facilitate collaborative art activities that encourage social interaction and teamwork.
  • Manage group activities in a structured manner that promotes engagement and participation.

Promote Creativity and Self-Expression

  • Encourage participants to explore different forms of artistic expression.
  • Support individuals in creating original artwork that reflects their interests, emotions, and ideas.
  • Provide opportunities for participants to display and celebrate their artwork.

Participant Progress and Documentation

  • Monitor participants' artistic progress and provide constructive feedback.
  • Maintain records of individual progress, achievements, and areas for improvement.
  • Support participants in reaching individualized goals related to creativity and skill development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by APluscare management.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required; Bachelor's Degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred or equivalent education/training.
  • Proficiency in a variety of artistic techniques including drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills to coordinate art activities and programs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping individuals express themselves through art.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods based on individual needs and abilities.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the program area while engaging with participants.
  • Physical activities may include sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending, and walking.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to demonstrate artistic techniques and assist participants with hands-on activities.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during behavioral or emergency situations, including implementation of crisis intervention techniques if required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with developmental disabilities and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Maintain all agency policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards.
  • Duties and responsibilities may be modified to meet the operational needs of the organization.

Required Trainings

All employees must successfully complete required New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) trainings, including:

  • Medication Administration
  • CPR & First Aid
  • Agency New Hire Orientation
  • Danielle's Law / Life-Threatening Emergencies Training
  • Additional agency or professional trainings as required
