Job description

Job Description
Senior Product Development Engineer
Salary Range: $130,000-$165,000
Remote
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Product Development Engineer with a strong electrical engineering background to lead the design, development, testing, and commercialization of industrial rotary encoder products.
This role will have significant ownership across the full product development lifecycle, including circuit design, prototyping, validation, certification, project planning, documentation, manufacturing support, and troubleshooting of both new and legacy products. The position works closely with electrical and mechanical engineering teams to develop reliable electronic and magnetic systems designed to operate in demanding industrial environments.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical expert who can independently solve complex engineering problems while also leading cross-functional projects and providing technical guidance to other engineers.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead new product development projects for industrial rotary encoders and related electronic products.
  • Design, simulate, prototype, debug, and validate analog and digital electronic circuits.
  • Develop products to meet applicable regulatory and industry requirements, including CE, UL, and ATEX.
  • Select and specify electronic components for new designs and replacement of obsolete components.
  • Coordinate prototype development and testing with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Develop project plans, schedules, budgets, and technical documentation.
  • Conduct validation testing and document results, including FMEA activities and support for PFMEA.
  • Create bills of materials, engineering reports, work instructions, and other product documentation.
  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing and production teams.
  • Troubleshoot and improve existing and legacy products.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers on the packaging of sensitive electronics and magnetic components for harsh industrial environments.
  • Investigate complex technical issues, identify root causes, and develop effective corrective actions.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, coaching, and guidance to other engineers.
  • Contribute to improvements in engineering processes, product development practices, and technical standards.
  • Communicate project status, technical issues, and recommendations to internal stakeholders, senior leadership, suppliers, and customers as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in electrical circuit design and new product development.
  • Strong experience with both analog and digital electronics.
  • Experience with microprocessors, ASICs, and PCB design.
  • Knowledge of EMI immunity and emissions requirements and mitigation techniques.
  • Experience with magnetics and electronic systems used in industrial applications.
  • Experience with diagnostics and industrial communication buses/protocols such as RS-232, RS-485, I2C, SPI, and CAN.
  • Experience with conformal coating and electronics designed for challenging operating environments.
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting, debugging, and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Experience with electric motors and motor-control design.
  • Experience with real-time embedded programming using Embedded C.
  • Experience working in industrial automation or a comparable industrial technology environment.
  • Experience with structured product development or Stage-Gate processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex engineering projects from concept through production.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with rotary encoders, position sensing, magnetic sensing, or related industrial sensing technologies.
  • Experience with functional and product safety requirements.
  • Experience supporting regulatory certification and compliance activities.
  • Experience working with manufacturing teams in a production environment.
Technical Leadership & Impact
This is a senior technical leadership position with broad organizational impact. The successful candidate will:
  • Serve as a subject matter expert across multiple areas of electrical and product development engineering.
  • Lead complex projects that may span multiple engineering and business functions.
  • Develop and improve technical processes, standards, and product-development practices.
  • Apply knowledge of emerging technologies and practices from multiple industries to improve products and processes.
  • Address complex and often ambiguous technical problems through detailed investigation and root-cause analysis.
  • Provide technical direction, coaching, and training to other engineers and technical personnel.
  • Communicate effectively with senior leadership and external stakeholders on matters of significant technical or business importance.
Working Environment
  • Primarily an office and engineering environment with standard office equipment.
  • Occasional work in OSHA-compliant manufacturing facilities and industrial environments.
  • Potential customer-site visits may include industrial manufacturing facilities, ports, mines, warehouses, and logistics centers.
  • Less than 5% travel expected.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for an accomplished electrical engineer who combines deep technical expertise with strong product-development and project-leadership capabilities. You should be comfortable moving between circuit design, hands-on laboratory troubleshooting, manufacturing support, project planning, and strategic technical problem-solving.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the development of sophisticated industrial products while serving as a trusted technical resource across the organization.
