Job description

As an Engineer II โ€“ Intermediate Planning, youโ€™ll support MISOโ€™s work in the important space between long-term transmission planning and real-time operations. Your work will focus on the 18โ€“24-month planning horizon, where youโ€™ll perform power system studies and help develop transmission and reliability solutions that support Large Load Step-Up Service and prepare the grid for changing system needs.

Youโ€™ll work alongside experienced engineers and collaborate with teams across System Planning, Markets, Operations, Resource Adequacy, Generator Interconnection, and Load Integration. This is a great opportunity to strengthen your technical skills, gain exposure to multiple areas of MISO, and develop a broader understanding of how planning decisions translate into reliable grid operations.

How Youโ€™ll Make an Impact In this role, you will:
  • Perform Intermediate Planning studies across the 18โ€“24-month horizon, supporting Firm Service Step-Up analyses and recommendations tied to system upgrades and readiness milestones.
  • Conduct power system studies using tools such as PSS/E and TARA, including power flow modeling, contingency analysis, transfer analysis, transient and voltage stability, and other reliability assessments.
  • Analyze study results, identify potential reliability concerns, and contribute to the development of practical solutions that make effective use of the existing transmission system.
  • Support coordination of study assumptions, inputs, and results with teams across Expansion Planning, Generator Interconnection, Load Integration, Markets, Forward Operations, Operations, and Resource Adequacy.
In Your First Year, Youโ€™ll Know Youโ€™re Successful If You:
  • Build an understanding of MISOโ€™s Intermediate Planning processes and how they support reliable grid operations.
  • Develop proficiency in performing and interpreting 18โ€“24-month reliability studies supporting large-load integration and Firm Service Step-Up needs.
  • Effectively communicate study results, technical findings, and potential reliability concerns to teammates and cross-functional partners.
  • Build productive working relationships across Planning, Markets, and Operations while becoming an increasingly independent contributor.
  • Demonstrate continued growth in your technical knowledge, study capabilities, and understanding of MISOโ€™s transmission system.
What Weโ€™re Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology.
  • At least two (2) years of related power system planning or operations experience.

The appropriate level will be determined based on the selected candidate's experience, knowledge, and qualifications.

At MISO, your work helps ensure the reliable operation and continued evolution of one of the world's largest and most complex electric grids. In this role, you'll have an opportunity to help shape how MISO responds to rapidly growing large-load demand while strengthening the connection between where the grid is headed and what it needs to reliably deliver today.

The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $87,000-$112,000 USDannually. Base salary range for this position is included in accordance with requirements of various state/local pay transparency legislation. Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individual competencies, education/professional certifications, and qualifications/experience.

Position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met. At MISO we offer a comprehensive benefits package, including 401k, vacation, sick and safe time, available on your first day of employment.

Transformative innovation is happening in the electric industry, from digitalizing homes and distributed resources to renewable energy and an ever-changing grid. MISO manages the electricity superhighway in the Central U.S. Using groundbreaking research and sophisticated technology, our highly skilled employees ensure power flows reliably to 47 million people throughout North America. Operating the electricity grid, running a robust energy market, and planning for a bright future โ€“ itโ€™s what our immensely hard-working and dedicated team does every day.

Join #TeamMISO to be a driving force as we build the grid of the future.
