Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

Land Development Engineer

Join VHB's dynamic Land Development team in Virginia Beach, Williamsburg or Richmond, VA, where your engineering expertise will help shape communities and deliver impactful projects across commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional sectors. As a Land Development Engineer, you will contribute to the design and delivery of complex land development projects, working collaboratively with project teams, clients, and regulatory agencies to develop high-quality engineering solutions. This is a hands-on role for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving technical challenges and taking projects from concept through construction.

Responsibilities
  • Perform civil engineering design for land development projects, including site layout, grading, utility design, drainage, and stormwater management.
  • Prepare, review, and develop engineering plans, specifications, construction documents, and permitting materials.
  • Conduct technical analyses and develop practical engineering solutions that meet project requirements and applicable regulations.
  • Coordinate with internal project teams, consultants, clients, and regulatory agencies throughout the design and construction process.
  • Assist with construction administration activities, including responding to contractor questions, reviewing submittals, and providing technical support during construction.
  • Apply knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and standards, with particular familiarity with Virginia market and development codes.
  • Support project teams in developing scopes, schedules, and technical approaches for land development projects.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members, promoting professional growth and quality standards.
Skills and Attributes
  • Strong technical knowledge of site development, grading, drainage, utility design, stormwater management, and construction standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop practical, high-quality engineering solutions for complex land development projects.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working with project teams and clients.
  • Ability to multitask, think critically, solve problems, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and a commitment to technical excellence and continuous professional development.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in land development engineering.
  • PE license expected or ability to obtain in 6 months.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office; experience with GIS software is a plus.

The full-time annual base salary range for this position, located in Virginia is $90,000 to $125,000. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB's Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
