Please Note - This announcement is for unpaid student internship opportunities that may be offered throughout the year across various participating City of Huntsville Departments. The City's paid internship program is a separate 8-week summer program that is typically advertised in late December through early January.
UNPAID INTERN POSITION OVERVIEW:The City of Huntsville student intern position is an assignment designed to accommodate an internship in a technical, public administration, or business job function. This internship requires that the student be enrolled in a college/university working toward a degree in disciplines such as Accounting, Business, Communications, Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Engineering, Human Resources, Public Administration, Public Relations, Urban Development, Wastewater Design, or related field, or a student who has graduated from college no more than six (6) months prior to placement in the Internship. The student will develop public administration acumen and sharpen management skills in operating major functions in a public service environment. Assists in a wide variety of administrative and professional tasks in one of various city departments; provides research assistance, writes reports, and make recommendation on matters under study; gathers, compiles, tabulates and reports statistical data; acquires working knowledge of department practices, procedures, equipment and organization system; interviews and consults with officials, employees and other interested persons or groups on matters related to work assignments. Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team. Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.
Official transcript indicating verification of student college enrollment or diploma received (no more than six (6) months prior to placement in the Internship Program). A 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or better cumulative GPA.
Prior work experience, community involvement or participation in extra-curricular activities. Able to perform basic technical and business-related functions. Applicant must be a to work a flexible schedule and willing to work indoors and outdoors.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates for the unpaid student internship must be at least nineteen (19) years of age by their hire date.
Candidates for the unpaid student internship program must attach the following documents to their application before submitting:
Resume, Cover Letter, and three (3) Letters of Recommendation - at least two (2) professional and one (1) personal reference.
