What is a developer operations engineer intern?

Developer Operations Engineer Interns, often called DevOps Engineer Interns, are students or recent graduates who assist in bridging the gap between software development and IT operations. They help automate processes, manage infrastructure, and ensure efficient deployment and monitoring of applications. Interns in this role typically work with tools like CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, and scripting languages to support development teams and improve software delivery. This internship provides hands-on experience in both development and operations, preparing candidates for a career in DevOps.

What do developer operations engineer interns do?

As a Developer Operations Engineer Intern, you will typically work on tasks such as automating deployment pipelines, managing cloud infrastructure, monitoring system performance, and supporting CI/CD workflows. You may assist with troubleshooting build failures, writing scripts to streamline operations, and collaborating with both development and IT teams to ensure smooth software releases. This role provides hands-on experience with modern DevOps tools and practices, offering a solid foundation for a future career in site reliability or DevOps engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a developer operations engineer intern?

To thrive as a Developer Operations Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of software development, basic networking, and scripting languages such as Python or Bash, typically supported by coursework or relevant experience. Job description

About Us

At Intramotev, we are dedicated to revolutionizing the freight industry by liberating tons of freight from congested highways, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing transportation efficiency. We are deploying self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles to transform freight logistics and bring innovation to our rail network. Based in St. Louis, MO, we are committed to promoting industrial revitalization, saving lives, and minimizing the environmental impact of trucking/transportation. We actively foster a work environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunities for professional growth. Find your future with us.

Role Overview

Intramotev is seeking a motivated DevOps Engineer to join the software engineering team to support the development of autonomous, self-propelled rail vehicles. This role takes ownership of our existing CI/CD pipeline and supporting infrastructure — currently maintained part-time by other engineers — and grows it into a dedicated, full-time function. You will maintain, improve, and standardize the tools and systems that support day-to-day software development and deployment. This is a full-time, 100% in-office position based in St. Louis, MO.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pipeline Ownership: Take over and maintain the existing GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines, improving reliability, build times, and developer experience.

  • Infrastructure Maintenance: Manage internal server and cloud infrastructure to ensure availability and performance for the engineering team.

  • Tooling Integration: Standardize and integrate internally built engineering tools to streamline development workflows.

  • Test Automation: Maintain and extend automated testing frameworks within the pipeline, working with software engineers to expand coverage.

  • Lifecycle Support: Help diagnose and resolve infrastructure and deployment issues for fielded systems.

  • Documentation & Knowledge Transfer: Document existing systems, capture institutional knowledge from the engineers who built them, and establish sustainable operational practices.

Why Join Us?

  • Career Growth: Take a system that’s been someone’s side project and grow it into your own area of ownership in a forward-thinking company transforming rail technology.

  • Innovative Environment: Contribute to groundbreaking projects that bridge the past and future of rail transport.

  • Impactful Work: Be a key player in creating solutions that promote a more sustainable and efficient rail network.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • 2-4 years of experience in DevOps, Software Engineering, Build/Release Engineering, or Systems Administration.

  • Hands-on experience with GitHub Actions or comparable CI/CD platforms (e.g., "GitLab CI", "Jenkins", "CircleCI").

  • Working knowledge of at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure).

  • Comfort working with Linux servers and shell scripting.

  • Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; eager to learn.

  • Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment as an individual contributor.

  • Fluent in both written and verbal English.

  • Currently reside in the St. Louis metro area or willing to relocate at your own expense. Relocation assistance is not provided for this role.

  • Must be a U.S. Person. Immigration or work visa sponsorship will not be provided.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
Industry Experience

  • Exposure to Rail, Electric Vehicles, Unmanned Systems, or other hardware/embedded domains.

  • Experience supporting embedded software builds or hardware-in-the-loop testing.

Technical Skills

  • Containerization with Docker.

  • Scripting in Python or Bash for automation.

  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (e.g., "Terraform", "Ansible").

  • Exposure to monitoring and observability tooling (e.g., "Prometheus", "Grafana").

Process Experience

  • Working on cross-functional teams alongside other engineering disciplines.

  • Working in Agile/Scrum software development environments.

Typical Education and Experience

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g., "Bachelor") and typically 2 or more years’ related work experience.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $85,000 - $100,000, commensurate with experience.

  • Equity participation.

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits.

  • 401(k) plan.

  • Paid time off and company holidays.

Intramotev is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical or mental disability, genetic factors, military/veteran status or other characteristics protected by law.

If you’re interested in growing into a DevOps ownership role in autonomous rail technology, we’d love to hear from you!
