What does a detergent formulation chemical engineer do?

A Detergent Formulation Chemical Engineer specializes in designing and optimizing the chemical composition of detergents for cleaning applications. They work to create effective, safe, and environmentally friendly formulas by selecting and balancing surfactants, builders, enzymes, and other additives. Their role involves laboratory testing, quality control, and scaling up production processes while also ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Additionally, they may collaborate with marketing and production teams to develop innovative products that meet consumer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a detergent formulation chemical engineer?

To thrive as a Detergent Formulation Chemical Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical engineering, formulation science, and analytical chemistry, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with laboratory instruments, formulation software, and regulatory compliance systems such as REACH or SDS authoring tools is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork are important soft skills that enable innovation and efficient project completion. These skills and qualities are critical for developing safe, effective, and market-competitive detergent products in a regulated industry.

What are some common challenges faced by detergent formulation chemical engineers during product development?

Detergent Formulation Chemical Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing cleaning efficacy with environmental and regulatory requirements, ensuring product stability under various storage conditions, and sourcing cost-effective raw materials without compromising quality. They must also address compatibility issues with packaging and optimize formulations for different applications (e.g., liquid, powder, pods). Collaboration with R&D, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams is essential to troubleshoot issues and ensure successful scale-up from lab to production.

What is the difference between Detergent Formulation Chemical Engineer vs Detergent Production Chemist?

AspectDetergent Formulation Chemical EngineerDetergent Production Chemist

This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-growing pre-revenue company where you will take ownership of critical engineering projects right away, with the potential to grow into broader technical and team leadership responsibilities over time.
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Ensure safe, compliant, and reliable design, installation, modification, and operation of utility and support systems that interface with chemical processes, including those involving hazardous gases, treatment systems, and recycle routes
  • Lead or support utility-related projects from concept through commissioning, including design input, vendor engagement, contractor coordination, installation oversight, and system qualification
  • Conduct engineering evaluations, safety reviews, and hazard assessments to ensure systems meet internal and regulatory expectations
  • Troubleshoot utility and process-support systems, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions
  • Identify and drive improvements in system reliability, performance, maintainability, and capacity
  • Develop, revise, and maintain engineering documentation such as P&IDs, piping layouts, specifications, and standards
  • Collaborate with Process Engineering, Facilities, Equipment, and EHS teams to align utility capabilities with production needs and safety requirements
  • Contribute to long-term planning for utility infrastructure, including upgrades, expansions, and standardization

What we are looking for

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot systems and apply sound engineering judgment
  • Experience coordinating with contractors, vendors, or external service providers
  • Experience applying Process Safety Management practices, including hazard analysis, formal change management, and safe system design, startup, and operation
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, facilities, and EHS teams
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks or projects with minimal oversight
  • Exposure to commissioning, startup, or qualification of new equipment or infrastructure
  • Understanding of reliability concepts, maintenance strategies, or engineering standards
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering codes or industry practices

  • $110,000 - $150,000, depending on experience
  • Equity position in Niron via stock option grant
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Mental healthcare
  • 401k plan with company match
  • Paid vacation, sick time, and holidays
  • Experience in a fun, high-performing, manufacturing environment
