ELECTRICAL/INSTRUMENTATION DESIGNER

ON LOCATION: Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land Region

Orion Engineers + Constructors is currently seeking an Instrumentation Designer to join our client's team at their facility in Chocolate Bayou, Texas. This position o??ers a competitive compensation package, with salary determined based on the candidate’s experience, knowledge, and skills.

Summary

This role supports instrumentation projects at our client sites by coordinating project scope, design details, and field activities with the Project Manager and project team, applying instrumentation focused design principles to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant project execution. Key responsibilities include verifying and updating drawings in AutoCAD and MicroStation, maintaining accurate as-built documentation, assisting with construction estimates and startup support, and resolving field issues related to DCS/SCADA systems while working closely with Operations, Maintenance, HS&E, Automation, and Engineering to support successful commissioning and project closure.

Essential Functions:
  • Identify and communicate instrumentation project scope, specifications, and design criteria upon assignment to a project, seeking guidance on unfamiliar or complex requirements.
  • Participate in development and planning meetings for assigned projects and coordinate work activities with the Project Manager, Capital Engineer, and other project team members.
  • Proactively lead and coordinate the e??orts of a small design/drafting sta?? on defined tasks, under senior direction, to help achieve scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
  • Coordinate instrumentation design with plant and Capital Engineering SMEs from estimate through all design stages, including alignment with DCS/SCADA and operations needs.
  • Produce Electrical & Instrumentation bid/construction packages and drawings, with engineering review and approval, focused primarily on instrumentation deliverables (indexes, loops, hook-ups, location plans, and I/O wiring).
  • Determine instrumentation material take-o??s and assist in providing construction quantities and cost estimates for the E/I scope with appropriate oversight.
  • Perform field verification, redlining, and updating of existing drawings, and update existing drawings utilizing redlines by others to keep construction and as-built documentation accurate.
  • Check project design work prepared by others or outside resources for tag consistency, drawing accuracy, and basic conformance to codes, specifications, and design criteria, escalating complex issues to senior staff.
  • Provide on-site assistance to Commissioning/Start-Up teams, supporting loop checks, cutover, and startup activities, including basic troubleshooting of instrument issues in the field.
  • Assist in building and maintaining DCS/SCADA tag databases and support testing by verifying tags, ranges, units, and alarms between field devices and control systems.
  • Be teachable/trainable and willing to learn new skills, tools, and company standards, including completing required training and minimal travel to other UOP/Honeywell sites as project scope requires.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned or directed by the Orion manager and Client representative.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Preferred candidates will have a history of successful work experience and job assignments at refinery or chemical operating units.
  • Familiarity with software used in plant operations, like SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and MicroStation for E/I drawings is preferred.
  • Be prepared for on-call assignments, which may include overtime and o??-hours work requests, demonstrating flexibility and reliability.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills to e??ectively interact with colleagues and management, fostering a positive work environment.
  • Must demonstrate a personal commitment to Incident and Injury Free Operations with a proven track record in Safety and Reliability. This is a safety-sensitive role.
  • Must be able to work on assignment without sponsorship and at client location.
  • This role will be working for Orion Engineers and Constructors at client location.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Thorough understanding of or the ability to quickly learn about the project or product being developed.
  • Proficient with Microsoft O??ice Suite or related software.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret prints/drawings and other technical documents.
  • Ability to use most inspection tools, measuring and test equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and suitable driving record that is able to meet company driver requirements as may be required to obtain a TWIC.
  • Commitment to high quality.
  • Must be prompt, dependable and maintain a good attendance record.
  • Must be able to pass an approved background check.
  • Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test.
  • Must participate in random drug tests.
  • Associate’s, Technical Degree, or equivalent combination of education required.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of field and/or design experience in Industrial required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Work assignment inside an operating plant which requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to operate standard o??ice equipment and keyboard.Must be able to bend, stoop and climb on a ladder or up and down stairs.
  • Must be able to drive a company vehicle to and from job sites or o??ice locations.
  • Must be able to attend job walks wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in an operating facility in a hot climate.
  • Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
