Designer Builder information

What is a designer builder?

Designer Builders are professionals who manage both the design and construction aspects of building projects. They often work on residential or commercial properties, providing a seamless process from initial concept and design through to the completed construction. This integrated approach helps ensure that the project meets the client’s vision, stays on budget, and is completed efficiently. Designer Builders can work independently or as part of a design-build firm, offering clients a single point of contact throughout the project. Their role combines creative design skills with practical construction knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a designer builder?

To thrive as a Designer Builder, you need a strong background in architectural design, construction techniques, and project management, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Proficiency in CAD software, building information modeling (BIM), and familiarity with construction codes and permitting processes are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with clients and construction teams. These skills ensure that projects are executed safely, efficiently, and to client specifications, balancing aesthetics with structural integrity.

How do designer builders typically collaborate with clients and other construction professionals during a project?

Designer Builders often serve as the bridge between clients, architects, and construction teams, ensuring that project visions are translated into practical, buildable plans. They regularly meet with clients to discuss requirements and adjustments, coordinate with engineers for technical feasibility, and supervise construction crews to maintain design intent. This role requires strong communication and project management skills to keep everyone aligned and address challenges as they arise. Successful Designer Builders excel at balancing aesthetic goals with budgetary and structural considerations.

What is the difference between Designer Builder vs Architect?

AspectDesigner BuilderArchitect
CredentialsDesign certifications, construction knowledgeArchitect license, design accreditation
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, design officesDesign studios, client meetings, regulatory agencies
Industry UsageResidential, commercial, custom projectsLarge-scale projects, regulatory planning

Designer Builders focus on both designing and constructing projects, often working directly with clients and managing construction. Architects primarily focus on designing buildings, obtaining permits, and overseeing the design process. While both roles require design expertise, Designer Builders are more involved in the construction process, whereas Architects concentrate on design and regulatory compliance.

How much do designer builders make?

Designer builders typically earn between $50,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Skilled professionals with certifications and a strong portfolio can earn higher salaries, especially in high-demand markets or specialized construction environments.

How to become a designer builder?

To become a designer builder, typically you need a combination of education in architecture, engineering, or construction management, along with experience in design and construction projects. Gaining relevant skills in CAD software, project management, and obtaining certifications such as LEED or OSHA can enhance your qualifications. Practical experience through apprenticeships or entry-level roles is also important to develop the necessary expertise in both design and building processes.

Job description

Simons was founded in 1840 by John Simons in Quebec City. Originally a dry goods store, the family company is known today for accessible and inspired fashion. It is committed to cultivating creativity and building meaningful relationships with its staff, partners, and clientele. The company cares about the environment and about the communities in which it does business.

Simons is recognized as a fashion authority with an original shopping concept. Exclusive collections, emerging local and nationally recognized brands, and pieces by top designer names are all available under one roof in the store's distinctive zones.

Passionate about innovation and attuned to emerging trends, the Designer plays a key role in shaping inspiring, exclusive collections. This role requires close collaboration with multiple departments to ensure that every design strikes the right balance between creativity, quality, and commercial relevance. The Designer transforms trend insights and inspiration into distinctive pieces that reflect the identity of our exclusive collections while meeting the needs of our clientele.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth research and analyze current and future fashion trends, interpreting emerging ideas through a commercial lens.
  • Actively participate in the development and presentation of upcoming trend materials.
  • Research and develop new fabrics, finishes, treatments, and trims respecting budget constraints while strengthening brand identity.
  • Collaborate closely with the buying team throughout the product creation process.
  • Design innovative, commercially viable, high-quality products tailored to our clientele.
  • Create technical drawings and tech packs for products in our exclusive collections.
  • Partner with technical designers during fittings and provide detailed feedback.
  • Work alongside the production team to align manufacturing capabilities with our quality standards, optimizing timelines and value.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in fashion design, graphic design, product design, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with production, buying, and sourcing teams.
  • Ability to clearly communicate ideas and receive feedback constructively.
  • A natural curiosity and solid fashion culture, with a strong grasp of both current and historical influences and trends.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and adapt calmly to tight deadlines and unforeseen challenges.
  • Flexibility to respond quickly to changes in design demands, last-minute adjustments, and evolving market needs.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills in both French and English to collaborate with all stakeholders.

Benefits Available

  • A telemedicine service and Employee and Family Assistance Program.
  • Group insurance plan and RRSP.
  • Up to 40% off Simons purchases.

At Simons, people are at the heart of all that we do. We pay special attention to the well-being of our employees and their families, highlighting important moments that mark their journey, including service anniversaries and significant life milestones.

Creativity, community, and respect are an integral part of our DNA. We offer everyone the opportunity to build a career that's suited to them, whether that's at our stores, head office, or Campus in Quebec City. Proud to recognize our teams' contributions, we provide competitive work conditions as well as a comprehensive and scalable range of benefits. We also promote flexibility and a welcoming, inclusive, and caring work environment, where everybody can reach their full potential.

Take this opportunity to join our dedicated team and make a difference at a company where people are the top priority.
