Job description

Job Title: Design Basis Engineer II - Sr. (Trans)(Substation)

Work Place Flexibility: Onsite

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:

The Substation Design Basis Engineer supports the technical foundation, design governance, and operational performance of Entergy’s transmission substations.  Work includes routine and non‑routine engineering activities as well as technical support during emergency and storm restoration events. The engineer helps ensure safe, reliable, and high‑quality substation systems by applying sound engineering judgment, maintaining standards, and supporting cross‑functional engineering and field teams.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Engineering Design, Maintenance & Operations Support

  • Apply engineering principles and utility best practices to develop technically sound, cost‑effective solutions that strengthen reliability and system performance.
  • Interpret and apply electrical codes, standards, procedures, and internal policies to ensure compliance and design integrity.
  • Provide engineering support and technical direction to field operations, construction personnel, and other transmission stakeholders.
  • Participate in failure analysis, root‑cause evaluations, and system troubleshooting for substation equipment and protection systems.

Standards, Governance & Technical Leadership

  • Maintain deep knowledge of applicable procedures, programs, and engineering standards within assigned functional areas.
  • Provide technical leadership within the department, supporting knowledge development, design consistency, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate across Transmission Engineering, Operations, Planning, Asset Management, and other business units to achieve organizational objectives.

Collaboration, Stakeholder Support & Cross‑Functional Coordination

  • Work effectively with multidisciplinary teams to drive engineering accuracy, constructability, and operational excellence.
  • Advise field personnel on complex technical issues and support resolution of emerging equipment and operational challenges.
  • Support departmental efforts to improve processes, documentation, and engineering quality.

Safety, Reliability & Emergency Support

  • Work safely and comply with all Entergy safety policies and procedures.
  • Identify, communicate, and mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Provide onsite or remote support during storms, restoration, and grid emergencies as required

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Discipline (typically Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Industrial) from a four-year accredited institution
  • Degrees in engineering technology (typically Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Industrial) from a four-year accredited institution with PE may be considered

Minimum Experience:

  • Engineer II: at least 2 years of experience in an engineering discipline
  • Engineer III: at least 4 years of experience in an engineering discipline
    Engineer Sr: at least 6 years of experience in an engineering discipline

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of procedures, programs, and standards in responsible area.
  • Consistently demonstrates good judgement.
  • Good interpersonal skills along with strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Good knowledge of personal computer operations and related software.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities and changing priorities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Required to work safely and follow all Entergy safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to recognize hazards in the workplace and have the ability to mitigate the hazards.
  • Demonstrated acceptance of a diverse and inclusive work environment and customer base.
  • Ability to recognize opportunities for process improvement and have the ability to enact change.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Preferred:

  • Knowledgeable in MS Office toolkit.
  • Self-motivated with ability and desire to make good decisions.
  • Able to work cross functional with other personnel, departments and organizations.
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Engineer I – III: None.
  • Sr. Engineer: EIT or Graduate Level Engineering Degree or MBA.
