POSITION: Design Engineer

DEPARTMENT: Engineering

REPORTS TO: VP of Engineering and Quality

JOB SUMMARY: The Design Engineer is responsible for the design of customized metal/wood composite tables, display fixtures, cabinets and millwork for commercial food service and retail environments. These designs are developed based on customer specification and performance characteristics. Ensure quality and timely completion of project assignments meeting cost targets. Participate in core team meetings with customers and project management so that customers' requests are implemented into final design, while maintaining standards for compliance and manufacturability. Maintain CAD data in accordance with QualServ standards and procedures.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Convert customer's basic design concept into a fully functional design that will meet their performance expectations
  • Utilize existing inventory of materials and components when possible while being attentive to material yield
  • Specify new materials or components and coordinate with sourcing teams on item setup and procurement
  • Incorporate, as necessary, basic electrical and plumbing elements into cabinet or wall sections
  • Create approval drawing sets for customer review which accurately reflect materials, overall dimensions, critical dimensions, key features, and intended function
  • Develop accurate Bill of Materials or each finished good assembly or subassembly
  • Structure subassembly designs for logical routing through operational work centers
  • Pursue design for manufacturability opportunities on both new and existing products
  • Create manufacturing drawing prints for both part fabrication and final assembly
  • Lead pre-production design review meetings with cross-functional teams
  • Provide production support and troubleshooting for any issues on the manufacturing floor
  • Validate designs on prototypes and other first article production samples
  • Offer solutions for VA/VE cost reduction through design
  • Participate in design review meetings with customers to answer questions and provide design related insights
  • Develop working knowledge for regulatory product compliance related to standards such as NSF, UL, and ADA


Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or related field.

3D CAD solid modeling & Drafting Experience using SolidWorks Design software, including Sheet Metal

Experience managing CAD data within a PDM or PLM system

5+ years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment

Demonstrated skill in product design 

Proficiency within Microsoft software Suite including Outlook and Excel

Experience with metal cutting, forming, welding, and fabrication is a plus

Experience with CNC wood cutting, laminating, milling, and millwork assembly is a plus

Experience reading and interpreting architectural plans is a plus

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

Must display effective verbal and written communication skills with all levels of employees

Will have strong analytical skills with high attention to detail

Ability to independently weigh and manage priorities including follow-up on project status

Display flexibility and diplomacy when dealing with production staff and other coworkers

Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally

Occasionally required to stand/walk for 2-4 hours per day for project-based assignments on production floor
