Job description

At Lyft, our purpose is to serve and connect. We aim to achieve this by cultivating a work environment where all team members belong and have the opportunity to thrive.

The Govtech team builds rich and creative features that set the standard for the ride sharing industry. We are seeking a highly motivated, early-career software engineer to contribute to the development of features that facilitate Lyft's entry into new markets, ensure the company's adherence to local regulatory requirements, and utilize the latest AI technologies to enhance the user experience. Ownership is a key quality for this team; this person should be driven to track a project to successful completion and beyond, taking initiative to work with other teams and functions to ensure the code they write reaches users and drives impact.

As a Software Engineer for Govtech, you'll be responsible for executing integrations with partners, making tradeoffs between technical investments and product work, and collaborating with other engineers on system design. You will help shape the product direction by developing a deep understanding of the customer and working closely with cross-functional partners from Product, Design, Science, and Operations. You will work with a group of talented engineers and help the team to deliver significant business impact. If you enjoy collaborating with technical and nontechnical partners in a fast-moving space with real-world impact, this is the role for you.

Responsibilities:
  • Implement well-defined backend tasks and features with clear requirements, under close guidance from senior engineers, taking ownership of assigned work through to completion
  • Write well-crafted, well-tested, readable, maintainable code
  • Unblock, support and communicate with external and internal partners to achieve results
  • Ramp up on the team's backend and frontend systems, architecture, and internal tooling, developing a working understanding of how services fit together
  • Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and distribute knowledge
  • Share your knowledge by giving brown bags, tech talks, and promoting appropriate tech and engineering best practices
  • Engage in team rituals - standups, sprint planning, retros - and contribute actively
  • Participate in on-call rotations with close support and mentorship from senior team members
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset by incorporating feedback quickly and showing curiosity about the broader system and product.
Experience:
  • 2 years of engineering industry experience
  • BS/MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Experience with object-oriented programming
  • Experience in distributed systems
  • Experience working with databases, relational or NoSQL
  • Write clear, scalable and clear design documentation
  • Design, build and improve a set of team owned components
  • Nice to have: experience working with public cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure, etc.)
  • Nice to have: experience with machine learning and building LLM applications
  • Nice to have: proficiency in AI tools.
  • Nice to have: experience with front-end development
Benefits:
  • Extended health and dental coverage options, along with life insurance and disability benefits
  • Mental health benefits
  • Family building benefits
  • Child care and pet benefits
  • Access to a Lyft funded Health Care Savings Account
  • RRSP plan with company match to help save for your future
  • In addition to provincial observed holidays, salaried team members are covered under Lyft's flexible paid time off policy. The policy allows team members to take off as much time as they need (with manager approval). Hourly team members get 15 days paid time off, with an additional day for each year of service
  • Lyft is proud to support new parents with 18 weeks of paid time off, designed as a top-up plan to complement provincial programs. Biological, adoptive, and foster parents are all eligible.
  • Subsidized commuter benefits and Lyft ride credits

Lyft is committed to creating an inclusive workforce that fosters belonging. Lyft believes that every person has a right to equal employment opportunities without discrimination because of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status, disability, pardoned record of offences, or any other basis protected by applicable law or by Company policy. Lyft also strives for a healthy and safe workplace and strictly prohibits harassment of any kind.  Accommodation for persons with disabilities will be provided upon request in accordance with applicable law during the application and hiring process. Please contact your recruiter if you wish to make such a request.

Lyft highly values having employees working in-office to foster a collaborative work environment and company culture. This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule - Team Members will be expected to work in the office at least 3 days per week, including on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
