About the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The depth and breadth of IRIM breaks through disciplinary boundaries and allows for transformative research that transitions from theory to robustly deployed systems featuring next-generation robots. Fundamental research includes expertise in mechanics, control, perception, artificial intelligence and cognition, interaction, and systems.

The Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines (IRIM) seeks a Research Scientist to support and accelerate a portfolio of research projects spanning robotics, artificial intelligence, human robot interaction, and autonomous systems. This role focuses on research integration, project coordination, and technical leadership across multiple ongoing efforts.

The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, students, research staff, and external collaborators to ensure that research projects progress effectively from concept to deployment. In addition to supporting collaborative projects, the Research Scientist will have opportunities to develop independent research directions, publish scientific findings, and lead research initiatives aligned with the laboratory's mission.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Development and Research

Contribute to the design, implementation, and evaluation of robotic and AI systems.

Lead selected technical efforts and independent research projects.

Assist with experimental design, data collection, system integration, and performance evaluation.

Coordinate and maintain shared research infrastructure, including robotic platforms, datasets, computing resources, and laboratory equipment.

Support deployment of robotic systems in laboratory, field, and community environments.

Contribute to scientific publications, technical reports, and conference presentations.

Promote best practices in software quality, reproducibility, and documentation.

Research Integration and Project Leadership

Coordinate and support multiple concurrent research projects, helping to define milestones, timelines, deliverables, and evaluation plans.

Facilitate collaboration among students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and external partners.

Identify opportunities for integration across projects, datasets, software systems, and robotic platforms.

Mentor graduate and undergraduate students on research methodology, project execution, and technical development.

Research Program Development

Assist with proposal preparation, project reporting, and dissemination activities.

Contribute to strategic planning and the development of future research directions.

Develop collaborations with academic, industry, government, and community partners.

Identify opportunities for and pursue new research initiatives and external funding.

Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.

Experience developing and deploying robotic systems.

Proficiency in Python and/or C++.
