Job description

Summary:
The Automation Design Engineer is integral to our mission of creating lasting value for those we serve. This role serves as a vital resource for both internal and external clients. The primary responsibility involves collaborating with Solution Architects to design and implement automation solutions that enable our manufacturing clients to achieve their goals.
Competency in engineering design for control systems and automation, with a strong focus on developing and implementing advanced automation solutions to optimize production processes is required for success in this role. Proficiency in automation technologies may include, but are not limited to, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Industrial Controls, Industrial Networks, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Motor Control Centers (MCCs), and manufacturing software. The individual in this role exemplifies behaviors that align with our organizational culture, the 5 Ps, and our overarching purpose of creating lasting value.
Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
  • Ability to work closely with customers and team members to gather essential information for creating functional descriptions, scopes of work, requests for proposals, system designs, and/or solutions as needed.
  • Travel to customer site may be required.
  • Analyze existing manufacturing processes and production metrics and recommend process improvements, new technologies, and methods to maximize operational efficiency, reduce costs, and increase productivity.
  • Review a provided functional specification and design the solution to meet requirements.
  • Define scopes of work using Work Breakdown Structure and estimate hours for completion.
  • Prepare competitively priced solutions while maximizing company profitability.
  • Present designs and solutions to internal & external stakeholders.
  • Implement design & solutions at the customer site and/or oversee technical implementation details during project execution verifying implementation matches design & specification.
  • Collaborate with the team to create and maintain Van Meter's automation standards.
  • Collaborate with and support other engineers, managers, and sales team.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and solutions to support the evolution of our customers and market demands.
  • Identify areas for the team to build efficiencies when analyzing, designing and implementing solutions.
  • Prepare documentation, such as testing protocols and manuals.
  • Ensure compliance with Industry safety standards.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed and accurate reports on activities.
  • Craft models and drawings of products & systems.
  • Assist in training the sales team on products & solutions.

Job Requirements/Specifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in design engineering, engineering, product design, industrial design, or related field; and/or 3-5 years' previous experience in industry.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with automation systems & programming is preferred.
  • Experience with engineering design tools preferred.

  • Frequently sitting, working with hands, working with fingers, talking, hearing, and works with others
  • Some standing, walking, works alone, and customer contact
