What is a design librarian?

Design Librarians are specialized information professionals who manage, curate, and provide access to design-related resources such as books, journals, digital media, and special collections. They support students, faculty, and researchers in fields like architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and the arts by helping them locate and use relevant materials. Design Librarians also teach information literacy, develop specialized research guides, and may participate in the digitization and preservation of unique design collections. Their role often involves collaborating with academic departments and staying current with trends in design and information technology.

How does a design librarian typically collaborate with faculty and students in academic settings?

Design Librarians work closely with faculty to develop research guides, curate resources that support curriculum, and provide instruction on information literacy tailored to design disciplines. They often partner with students on research projects, assisting with resource discovery and citation management. Regular collaboration may include leading workshops, supporting studio courses, and participating in curriculum development committees to ensure library collections remain relevant and innovative.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Librarian, you need expertise in library and information science, familiarity with design fields, and a relevant MLS/MLIS degree. Proficiency with digital asset management systems, cataloging tools, and research databases is commonly required. Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, and the ability to collaborate with faculty, students, and creative professionals make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure effective support for design research, efficient management of specialized collections, and the promotion of innovative learning environments.
