To thrive as a Design Estimation Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, experience with cost estimation, and typically a degree in mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering. Proficiency in CAD software, estimation tools like CostX or Bluebeam, and familiarity with industry-specific codes and standards are essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and accurately conveying project scopes. These skills ensure precise cost projections, efficient project planning, and successful delivery of engineering solutions.

What are the most common challenges faced by Design Estimation Engineers, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Design Estimation Engineers often face the challenge of balancing accuracy and efficiency when preparing cost estimates and project timelines, especially when dealing with incomplete or evolving project specifications. Coordinating with both design and project management teams is essential to gather up-to-date information and ensure estimates reflect current requirements. To address these challenges, engineers should maintain clear communication channels, stay current with industry pricing trends, and utilize advanced estimation software to streamline processes. Proactively identifying potential risks and building contingencies into estimates can also help mitigate unforeseen changes during project execution.

What is a Design Estimation Engineer?

A Design Estimation Engineer is a professional who analyzes project requirements and prepares accurate cost estimates for engineering designs, typically in construction, manufacturing, or infrastructure projects. They evaluate technical drawings, specifications, and other documents to determine the materials, labor, and time required for a project. Their role is crucial in helping companies plan budgets, assess project feasibility, and submit competitive bids. Design Estimation Engineers work closely with design teams, project managers, and clients to ensure cost-effective and efficient project execution.

Job Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
As a State Estimation Engineer within the SEAM Embodied AI organization, you will be an individual contributor driving cutting-edge localization and sensor calibration solutions that directly impact autonomous driving performance. Your role is pivotal in designing, architecting, and deploying advanced systems for purposes including pinpointing the vehicle's location in the world, and calibrating parameters of all sensors to ensure they optimally support many other vehicle subsystems. You'll participate in critical technical initiatives, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, work with senior engineers across the organization, and significantly shape the future of onboard autonomous driving capabilities.
What You'll Do
  • Drive the design, development, and deployment of advanced solutions for state estimation, localization, sensor calibration and more.
  • Lead and architect critical infrastructure for validating localization and sensor calibration systems, and for continuously monitoring localization performance on deployed vehicles,
  • Help to ensure high software quality, through build-out of continuous integration components such as regression test suites and simulation scenarios.
  • Ownership of vital tools used by our teams for prototyping new solutions, debugging issues observed on real vehicles, and accelerating development of test infrastructure.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering groups, ensuring seamless integration of localization, sensor alignment, and other capabilities into autonomous vehicle systems.
  • Influence technical roadmaps, shaping strategic priorities aligned with company objectives and product milestones.

Your Skills & Abilities
  • Master's or B.S. in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience developing and deploying software for real-time applications and/or cloud infrastructure.
  • 1+ years of background in state estimation and/or sensor calibration.
  • Strong software engineering proficiency, particularly in C++ and Python, alongside extensive hands-on experience with development, integration, and testing tools.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, comfortable influencing technical strategy and guiding engineering excellence across the organization.

Bonus
AV/ADAS experience is a big plus
Remote: This role is based remotely but if you live within a 50-mile radius of Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford or Mountain View, you are expected to report to that location three times per week, at minimum.
