What is a design engineer?

Design engineers develop ideas for new products and determine ways to improve existing products. As a design engineer, you put a creative perspective on your technical engineering knowledge to perform your job duties, which include creating sketches of design ideas and using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to generate plans for prototypes. To ensure the product is viable, you also evaluate other aspects of the product design, such as safety, cost, sustainability, aesthetics, and user experience. You collaborate with a team of technicians and other engineers to run tests, troubleshoot problems, and ultimately produce a newly designed product.

What does a design engineer do?

A Design Engineer is responsible for creating and developing new products, systems, or structures by combining engineering principles with creative design. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce detailed drawings and specifications, working closely with other engineers and teams to ensure functionality, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Design Engineers are involved in every stage of product development, from initial concept through prototyping, testing, and final production. Their work often requires problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to communicate ideas clearly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation software, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE), are commonly required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating ideas into workable designs. These abilities ensure innovative, efficient, and manufacturable solutions that meet both technical and client requirements.

How does a design engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Design Engineers regularly work alongside teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and product management to ensure that designs are both innovative and feasible for production. Collaboration often involves participating in cross-functional meetings, reviewing prototypes, and incorporating feedback from various stakeholders. This teamwork is essential to address technical and practical challenges early in the design process, which ultimately helps in delivering a successful product to market. Strong communication and adaptability are key skills for thriving in this collaborative environment.

What is the difference between Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectDesign EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Design certifications often preferredBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license optional
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD software, project planningManufacturing plants, labs, fieldwork, CAD and testing
Employer & Industry UsageProduct design firms, automotive, aerospace, consumer goodsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy sectors

Design Engineers focus on creating and developing product designs using CAD tools, while Mechanical Engineers often work on the broader application, testing, and manufacturing of mechanical systems. Both roles require engineering degrees, but Design Engineers typically emphasize design skills and software proficiency, whereas Mechanical Engineers may engage more in analysis and system integration.

What jobs can a design engineer do?

A design engineer creates and develops new products, systems, or structures across industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and manufacturing. They use CAD software, perform simulations, and collaborate with teams to ensure functionality and safety. Design engineers often work in research and development, product design, or process improvement roles.

Job description

Prudentia Sciences is an AI-powered technology platform transforming how biopharma, biotech, and life sciences investors approach portfolio management, due diligence, and value/risk simulation. Our platform accelerates investment in breakthrough therapies by:

  • Empowering biopharma to accelerate drug pipelines, maximize ROI, and achieve clinical and commercial success for greater patient impact
  • Enabling strategic positioning of asset value during portfolio planning and dealmaking
  • Equipping investors with data-driven insights to optimize capital allocation in drug asset transactions

Backed by GV (Google Ventures), Iaso Ventures, and Virtue, weโ€™re on a mission to unlock the full potential of pharmaceutical R&D by empowering decisionโ€‘makers with realโ€‘time, dataโ€‘driven insights.

The Opportunity

We're seeking an exceptional Design Engineer to lead the evolution of our platform's user experience, working directly in the codebase to design, prototype, and ship enterprise CRM and pipeline management workflows, data visualization, and our design system. This role is for someone who doesn't hand off mockups and wait โ€” you sketch ideas in code, test them against real data, and iterate until they're right. This is a rare opportunity to join a high-impact, growth-stage technology company in the pharmaceutical sector, where your work will directly influence how lifeโ€‘changing therapies reach patients faster.

What You'll Do

Design and Build in the Codebase

  • Work fluidly in tools like Claude Code to prototype, test, and refine UI ideas directly against our production codebase โ€” not just in Figma.
  • Own the full loop from concept to shipped component: sketch an interaction, build a working version, validate it with real data and real users, and land it in the product.
  • Move fluently between design tools and code, using whichever gets you to a real answer fastest.

Own Product Design End-to-End

  • Own the design of complex enterprise deal making and pipeline management workflows, translating intricate business processes into intuitive, actionable experiences.
  • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Customer Success teams to define user flows, dashboards, and interfaces that support sales, BD, and operations teams.
  • Advocate for users across the platform, ensuring seamless interactions for multiโ€‘stakeholder enterprise workflows.

Drive Data Visualization Excellence

  • Design and build interactive, enterpriseโ€‘grade dashboards and visualizations that communicate complex datasets clearly and effectively.
  • Establish patterns, guidelines, and reusable components for scalable, maintainable data visualization experiences โ€” and implement them yourself where it makes sense.
  • Collaborate with analytics and engineering teams to ship designs that are technically sound and visually compelling.

Maintain and Evolve the Design System

  • Build and maintain design system components as living code, not just static specs.
  • Introduce new components, patterns, and best practices that support rapid feature development across the team.

Who You Are

Essential Qualifications

  • 5+ years of product design experience with a strong portfolio showcasing enterprise CRM, pipeline management, and workflow design.
  • Comfortable writing and shipping productionโ€‘quality frontโ€‘end code (React/TypeScript or similar), and using AI coding tools like Claude Code as a core part of your workflow.
  • Expertise in data visualization, translating complex data into intuitive dashboards and interfaces.
  • Strong experience with design systems, component libraries, and design tooling (Figma, Storybook, etc.), and the judgment to know when to prototype in code instead.
  • Strong problemโ€‘solving skills, balancing user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.

What Sets You Apart

  • A track record of designing by building โ€” you'd rather stand up a working prototype than debate a static mock.
  • Exceptional visual design sensibility, especially for complex, dataโ€‘driven interfaces.
  • Ability to simplify highly technical information into clear, intuitive experiences.
  • Comfortable leading initiatives independently while collaborating across teams.
  • Strategic thinker who can balance longโ€‘term vision with tactical execution.
  • Passion for healthcare, science, and products that make a realโ€‘world impact.

Bonus Points

  • Experience designing enterprise SaaS CRM or pipeline tools for sales, business development, or licensing workflows.
  • Familiarity with biopharma, life sciences, or healthcare platforms.
  • Familiarity with AI/MLโ€‘powered dashboards or advanced analytics products.

What We Offer

  • Benefits: Flexible PTO plan, comprehensive health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, & 401k with match
  • Impact : Your work directly enables breakthrough therapies to reach patients faster
  • Ownership : Significant autonomy to build and execute your sales strategy
  • Growth : Groundโ€‘floor opportunity to shape our sales organization as we scale
