A Design Engineer Manager leads a team of design engineers in developing, testing, and refining products or systems. They oversee project timelines, coordinate with other departments, and ensure that design solutions meet technical, quality, and budget requirements. Additionally, they provide technical guidance, mentor their team, and often contribute to the hiring and training processes. Their role is crucial for bridging the gap between engineering and management, ensuring that projects are delivered efficiently and meet organizational goals.

How does a design engineer manager balance technical project responsibilities with team leadership duties?

As a Design Engineer Manager, balancing technical tasks and team leadership is essential. You are often responsible for overseeing project timelines, ensuring design quality, and addressing technical challenges, while also mentoring team members, conducting performance reviews, and fostering collaboration. Effective delegation, regular team meetings, and clear communication help manage these dual responsibilities. Many Design Engineer Managers find success by setting aside dedicated time for both technical reviews and one-on-one sessions with their team, ensuring neither aspect is neglected.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design engineer manager, and why are they important?

Job description

Department Focus:

The Cloud Platform department at Deliverect is the engine that drives our customers' success by providing a reliable, scalable, and secure platform for exceptional customer experiences. Our team of passionate engineers and architects constantly innovates and refines our solutions, equipping businesses with the cutting‑edge technology they need to thrive in today's competitive landscape and deliver unparalleled ordering experiences.

Your Impact:

As the Head of Infrastructure/DevOps and Security, you will lead our global cloud reliability function, playing a pivotal role in aligning and optimizing our entire platform infrastructure. You will design and execute strategies to streamline CI/CD pipelines, improve system resilience, and ensure our engineering teams have the secure environments and insights they need to succeed in our high‑growth B2B SaaS environment.

This is a full‑time, hybrid role with a flexible work schedule, offering 3 days in either our Ghent, London or Madrid office and 2 days from the comfort of your home.

What you will do:
  • Infrastructure Strategy & Vision (approx. 30%): Execute a global infrastructure strategy aligned with company growth plans. Partner with engineering leaders to drive platform predictability, operational excellence, and scalable cloud architecture.
  • Security & Compliance (approx. 25%): Own and refine the end‑to‑end security posture of the application. Establish data governance frameworks to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance across all databases and microservices.
  • Automation & CI/CD Performance (approx. 20%): Lead our automation strategy, partnering with Product and Engineering to design delivery pipelines that drive growth and feature velocity. Measure system performance using clear KPIs and observability dashboards.
  • Engineering Enablement & Reliability (approx. 15%): Partner with tech leaders to streamline deployment processes across the development lifecycle. Drive incident response planning and Service Level Objective (SLO) quota setting with data‑driven insights.
  • Global Team Support & Innovation (approx. 10%): Manage the operational challenges of a distributed global team and support local clusters with tailored scaling strategies while maintaining a centralized global structure.
What you will bring:
  • Core Experience: 8+ years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or Cloud Security. You must have proven experience in a B2B SaaS company during a rapid growth phase and demonstrable experience supporting an enterprise platform globally.
  • Technical Proficiency: A deep, practical understanding of AWS/GCP ecosystems and Kubernetes orchestration. You must be an expert systems administrator with hands‑on experience in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and modern observability tools (Datadog, Prometheus).
  • Problem‑Solving: You are a data‑driven strategist who can devise high‑level strategy and is equally comfortable rolling up your sleeves to build a workflow or debug a system outage. You can rally people around a clear vision and build pragmatic solutions.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical and security‑centric concepts to a non‑technical audience. You are a strong "consent" builder who can motivate people across departments to align on solutions.
