What is a design engineer internship?

A Design Engineer Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in engineering design. Interns work under the supervision of experienced engineers to assist with designing products, systems, or components using tools like CAD software. They may participate in brainstorming sessions, draft technical drawings, and help test prototypes. This internship helps develop technical skills, real-world problem-solving abilities, and an understanding of the engineering design process.

What do design engineer interns do?

As a Design Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects such as creating CAD models, assisting with prototype development, and supporting design validation tests. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, gaining exposure to real-world engineering challenges and iterative design processes. You may also participate in team meetings, contribute to brainstorming sessions, and help document design changes, providing valuable insights into the full product development lifecycle. This role offers a great opportunity to build technical skills, learn industry-standard tools, and understand how engineering teams function in a professional setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design engineer intern?

To thrive as a Design Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals, CAD software proficiency, and coursework or a degree track in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering fields. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation software is often required, and experience with prototyping or 3D printing is a plus. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help you excel in collaborative design environments. These competencies enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to technical challenges, and support the innovation process within engineering teams.

What is the difference between Design Engineer Internship vs Design Engineer?

AspectDesign Engineer InternshipDesign Engineer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a relevant degree (e.g., Mechanical, Civil, Electrical Engineering)Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering or related field, with some roles requiring professional licensure
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in engineering firms, manufacturing, or construction companiesFull-time professional roles in design departments, engineering firms, or manufacturing companies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies to train and evaluate potential future employees; common in engineering and manufacturing sectorsEstablished engineering roles involved in designing products, systems, or structures across various industries

The main difference is that a Design Engineer Internship is a temporary, training-focused position for students or recent graduates, while a Design Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for designing engineering solutions. Internships provide hands-on experience, whereas full-time roles involve ongoing project responsibilities and career development.

Is a design engineer internship in high demand?

Job description

Chicago Trading Company (CTC) is a premier proprietary trading firm specializing in options market making. Our collaborative culture fuels innovation in quantitative research, systematic trading strategies, and cutting-edge trading technology. For over three decades CTC has provided critical liquidity across derivatives exchanges worldwide - making them fairer, more transparent, and more efficient.
We strive to be the most innovative firm in the industry today, tomorrow, and long into the future while upholding ethical excellence. We believe that CTC makes a positive impact on the markets, the lives of our employees, and all the communities to which we belong. Started in 1995 by a team of forward-thinking Traders, we are proud to call ourselves an industry leader that keeps making markets and each other better.
The Role
As a Software Engineering (SE) Intern, you will be challenged to learn and adapt in a dynamic, forward-thinking, and fast-paced environment and will experience life as an engineer on one of our technology teams. Your impact is immediate and meaningful. You will work alongside software engineers designing, solving and testing complex coding problems that will deliver solutions to our trading tools and risk applications. You will build the tools traders and quants rely on to price, trade, and manage risk in real time - and because our release cycles are measured in days, you will watch your code reach production and affect the desk almost immediately. This work draws on a solid foundation in computer science, software development practice, and strong communication and teamwork. You will get exposure to the design and implementation of these systems, which will allow you to build upon your technical skills. As part of the Summer Associate cohort, you will learn and socialize alongside other SE Interns and Quant Trading (QT) Interns.
There are a variety of languages you could get practical experience working with including (but not limited to): Java, C++, and Python. Software development cycles at CTC are short, and releases of proprietary software are frequent. This is a fast-paced and dynamic team environment where our engineers quickly see the results of their effort, and the impact that work has on our businesses.
Additionally, our engineers use AI coding assistants and agentic tooling in their daily workflow, and we are actively building AI into our trading, research, and engineering systems. As an intern, you will work in that environment and be encouraged to use these tools to ship more and ship it faster.
What to Expect
The 8-week internship program gives you insight into our culture and an inward look into what our business is all about. You will participate in three classroom learning experiences including: a week-long Basics of Options class, a multi-week class on the fundamentals of market making (Mock Trading), and a multi-week class that introduces elements of our quant framework (Quant Curriculum). You will also attend planned social activities and talks from various business leaders to propel your professional growth, and build your network with CTC employees and fellow interns. You will:
  • Deliver a technical project in an impactful role mirroring that of a full-time Software Engineering Associate
  • Get hands-on experience with our trading technology
  • Receive mentorship from members of our technology team
  • Experience a culture with a strong emphasis on teamwork and collaboration built through various educational and social activities

What it takes for you to be successful
  • A foundation in data structures, object-oriented programming and algorithms, and the ability to apply them to real-world problems
  • An interest in learning about technology, trading, pricing and risk management. No prior knowledge or experience in finance is necessary, but a deep curiosity and a hunger to learn is essential
  • You are a highly motivated, humble, and collaborative team member
  • Ability to thrive in a team-based environment filled with driven people who want to compete and win together
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas both written and verbally that showcase your analytical skills

Key Requirements
  • You are pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a similar technical field with Java, C++, or Python experience
  • You will graduate between December 2027-June 2028
  • You have a demonstrated record of success (academics, awards, etc.)
  • You are willing to relocate to Chicago, IL for the summer (most full-time offers will be in Chicago with a limited few in New York, NY)
  • You can participate in the full duration of the 8-week program from mid-June to early August 2027

Why should you consider interning at CTC?
  • Be part of a fast-growing, industry-leading global trading company
  • Work in an environment that actively explores and applies emerging technologies - including AI - to enhance trading, engineering, and research workflows
  • Opportunity to work with and learn from forward-thinking leaders in our industry
  • Excellent support system to ensure your learning and development
  • Competitive pay, free housing with your fellow interns in downtown Chicago, and free breakfast, lunch, and snacks!

Compensation
  • Monthly Salary of $16,500 plus a signing bonus

Please note: You are allowed to submit one application per position (i.e. SE Intern and QT Intern) during the recruiting cycle. We recommend focusing on applying for the role that aligns most closely with your skills and interests. While you can apply for more than one role, please keep in mind that each application will be assessed according to the specific requirements set for that role.
Most teams at CTC, with the exception of Trading, follow a hybrid workplace model, subject to change based on business need.
Our Benefits
We strongly believe in the well-being of our employees and their families so we offer outstanding benefits to support you both professionally and personally. These benefits include generous medical coverage, paid parental leave, free breakfast and lunch (plus healthy snacks, of course), wellness reimbursement, quarterly recharge days, and a variety of other benefits focused on providing the best employee experience.
(Disclaimer: interns and contractors are not eligible for benefits at CTC)
Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
