Design Editor information

What is a design editor?

Design Editors are professionals responsible for overseeing and shaping the visual layout and aesthetic of publications, websites, or other media. They work closely with writers, photographers, and other designers to ensure that content is visually appealing, consistent, and aligned with brand or editorial guidelines. Design Editors may also be involved in selecting images, managing design teams, and making final decisions on the overall look and feel of a project. Their goal is to enhance reader engagement and effectively communicate information through visual storytelling.

How does a design editor typically collaborate with writers and other creative team members during the production process?

A Design Editor works closely with writers, photographers, and art directors to ensure that visual elements and written content are seamlessly integrated. Regular meetings and collaborative review sessions are common, allowing the team to align on layout, style, and messaging. The Design Editor often provides guidance on visual storytelling, offers design feedback, and helps troubleshoot any issues that arise during production. This collaborative process not only enhances the quality of the final product but also fosters a dynamic and creative work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Editor, you need expertise in visual design principles, editorial judgment, and a strong grasp of layout software, often supported by a degree in graphic design, journalism, or a related field. Proficiency with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and familiarity with content management systems are typically required. Strong attention to detail, collaboration, and effective communication help a Design Editor guide creative teams and ensure cohesive visual storytelling. These skills are crucial for producing visually compelling, accurate, and reader-friendly content that upholds brand standards.

Job description

Level: Mid-Senior Engine and Tools Programmer

Location: on-site/hybrid

From dodgeball in the streets to racetracks in your living room, we've always been more interested in asking "what if?" than following a roadmap. Whether we're dreaming up a chaotic game of hide & seek in the dark or putting a legendary space fox back in the pilot's seat, that inventor's mindset runs through everything we do. We make games for people who appreciate craft and a little bit of magic. If you're curious, you'll be in good company.

This is a highly collaborative role, working closely with artists, designers, and other programmers. We have three requirements:

  1. At least five years of professional experience working on game engines and tools in a multi-platform environment.
  2. Our engine and tools are written in C. We are looking for applicants who have shipped major features written in C and/or C++.
  3. Our curiosity drives us. You must be deeply curious about something and have some evidence of that curiosity. We are looking for candidates that demonstrate a pattern of persistent and self-motivated exploration.

Some things you might find yourself doing in this role:

  • Building visual material authoring workflow (code generation, node-graph editing).
  • Adding play-in-editor support to our level editor.
  • Porting our client runtime to a new console platform.
  • Adding a new type of collision primitive to our physics system.

A few notes about how we do engine and tools programming at Velan:

  • Most of our games are built on our internal engine and tools. We believe that owning our tech gives us certain technical superpowers.
  • Velan works on all kinds of games, from augmented reality driven kart racers to shooters played in the dark. The varied needs of our games set the technical direction for our engine and tools.
  • Experienced engine and tools programmers operate with a fair degree of autonomy at Velan. While decisions about your areas of focus will be made collaboratively with the leadership team, once an area of focus is selected, you exercise a wide degree of discretion to accomplish your technical goals.
  • Although each of our systems has an owner, we are a small team, and you should expect to own several different systems. Additionally, we trust you to work across the codebase with minimal barriers.

The salary for this position is typically within the range specified below per year. Please note that the actual base pay may vary based on factors such as your qualifications, skills, experience, and other relevant considerations. In addition to your salary, our comprehensive compensation package includes various perks, such as potential annual bonuses (though they are not guaranteed), health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays, and flexible time-off benefits. This range covers mid-senior level -

Toronto, ON
Mid level: $85k-$125k CAD
Senior level: $105K-$145k CAD

Velan Studios is dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you are excited about a role but your experience doesn't align perfectly, we encourage you to submit a General Application. Velan Studios is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to inclusion, diversity, and providing a workplace free from discrimination and harassment. We seek to create a work culture that matches the diversity of our players.Â
