What is a design associate?

Design Associates are entry- to mid-level professionals who support design teams in creating visual concepts, layouts, and presentations for projects across industries such as graphic design, interior design, fashion, and architecture. They assist senior designers by conducting research, preparing materials, and using design software to bring creative ideas to life. Design Associates often collaborate with clients and other team members to ensure that the final product aligns with project goals and brand standards.

What are some common challenges design associates face when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

Design Associates often juggle several projects at once, which can make managing deadlines and shifting priorities a challenge. Effective communication with team members and clear organization of tasks are essential to ensure all projects move forward smoothly. Additionally, adapting quickly to feedback from clients or senior designers is key, as project requirements can change rapidly. Building strong time management skills and staying flexible will help you thrive in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Associate, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in graphic design, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate creatively are essential soft skills. These skills and qualities enable effective project execution, ensure design consistency, and foster successful teamwork in a fast-paced creative environment.

Job description

About the Role

Fontainebleau Development is seeking a talented and driven Senior Design Associate to join our in-house development department. This role is ideal for an emerging professional with a strong interior design sensibility and the ability to take ownership of projects from concept through construction.

Working closely with the Design and Development leaders, this individual will contribute across a range of high-end development projects — including Food & Beverage and amenity environments — supporting design execution, documentation, and project coordination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and development of architectural and interior design concepts, with a focus on FF&E, finish selections, and Point of Purchase (POP) environments.
  • Produce high-quality drawings, digital 3D models, presentations, and technical documentation.
  • Manage project timelines, deliverables, and coordination across internal and external teams.
  • Support construction administration, including site visits, submittal reviews, and coordination with contractors.
  • Collaborate with consultants, vendors, and stakeholders to ensure design intent is maintained throughout FF&E procurement and installation.
  • Lead material selection, FF&E specifications, and custom detailing across residential, F&B, and amenity spaces.
  • Drive POP design and branded environment development in coordination with project and marketing teams.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with team members and project partners.

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of professional experience in an interior design or architectural office, with demonstrated exposure to FF&E, F&B, or hospitality projects strongly preferred.
  • Professional degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or related field.
  • Strong design skills with a solid portfolio demonstrating both conceptual and technical abilities; work featuring FF&E specifications, POP design, or F&B environments is a plus.
  • Experience with project management and coordination.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, Rhino, Bluebeam, additional tools a plus).
  • Working knowledge of construction documentation and administration processes.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
