What is a design associate?

Design Associates are entry- to mid-level professionals who support design teams in creating visual concepts, layouts, and presentations for projects across industries such as graphic design, interior design, fashion, and architecture. They assist senior designers by conducting research, preparing materials, and using design software to bring creative ideas to life. Design Associates often collaborate with clients and other team members to ensure that the final product aligns with project goals and brand standards.

What are some common challenges design associates face when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

Design Associates often juggle several projects at once, which can make managing deadlines and shifting priorities a challenge. Effective communication with team members and clear organization of tasks are essential to ensure all projects move forward smoothly. Additionally, adapting quickly to feedback from clients or senior designers is key, as project requirements can change rapidly. Building strong time management skills and staying flexible will help you thrive in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Associate, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in graphic design, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate creatively are essential soft skills. These skills and qualities enable effective project execution, ensure design consistency, and foster successful teamwork in a fast-paced creative environment.

Job description

Description:Build Homes. Build Skills. Build Your Career.

For more than 34 years, Mitchell Homes has helped families across Virginia turn their land into the home of their dreams. As one of the region's largest and most trusted on-your-lot homebuilders, we've built our reputation the same way we build our homes — with craftsmanship, integrity, and a team that takes pride in every detail.

Now we're looking for a talented Drafter skilled in Revit to join our team. Whether you're launching your drafting career or bringing a few years of experience to the table, this is a rare opportunity to do meaningful work that you can literally see standing on land across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

What You'll Do

Your drawings will be the blueprint — literally — for every home we build. You will:

  • Produce accurate, polished Revit drawings for residential homes, from sales drawings for customer approval to permit drawings for county approval
  • Collaborate daily with our sales and estimating departments, engineers, lumber suppliers, and cabinet partners
  • Work directly with county permitting departments across VA, MD, NC and SC
  • Assist in reviewing project files to keep every home on track
What Makes This Role Rewarding
  • Real impact: The plans you draft become real homes for real families — there's no more satisfying way to put your skills to work.
  • Room to grow: Learn from an experienced team at an established, thriving company. We invest in our people with professional development assistance and a clear path to advance.
  • Excellence gets rewarded: We notice — and reward — team members who bring speed, accuracy, and great ideas to the table.
  • A team you'll enjoy: Positive attitudes and easy-going personalities aren't just welcome here; they're how we work.
  • Stability you can count on: Join a company with 34 years of continuous success and a full pipeline of projects.
What You'll Bring
  • A degree in drafting/design (Associate degree required)
  • Proficiency in Revit (minimum 1 year) — Revit is how we produce ALL of our drawings, so genuine comfort with it is essential. Entry-level to mid-level candidates encouraged to apply.
  • Speed and accuracy — you can draft plans quickly without sacrificing quality
  • Strong verbal, written, and graphic communication skills
  • The ability to multitask, prioritize, and find the most efficient path to the goal
  • Exceptional follow-up skills and a knack for solving problems
  • A positive attitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary: $45,000–$55,000/year, dependent on experience
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health savings account and flexible spending account
  • Life insurance and employee assistance program
  • Paid time off
  • Professional development assistance
  • Employee discount

Ready to help families build the homes they've always dreamed of — and build a career you're proud of at the same time?

Apply today. We can't wait to meet you.
