What are some common challenges faced by professionals in deployed roles, and how can they be effectively managed?

Professionals in deployed roles often encounter challenges such as adapting to unfamiliar environments, managing logistical complexities, and balancing work responsibilities with personal well-being. Effective communication and collaboration with both local teams and headquarters are crucial for overcoming these obstacles. Many organizations provide pre-deployment training and ongoing support to help employees adjust and remain resilient. Building strong relationships on the ground and maintaining open lines of communication can greatly enhance both job performance and satisfaction.

What does 'deployed' mean in a job context?

In a job context, 'deployed' usually refers to an employee or worker who is assigned to a specific location, project, or task, often away from their main office or base of operations. This term is commonly used in industries such as the military, construction, oil and gas, and IT, where employees may be sent to different sites to perform their duties. Being deployed often involves temporary relocation and can sometimes include working in challenging environments. The length and conditions of deployment vary depending on the employer and industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Deployed Operations Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deployed Operations Specialist, you need a strong background in logistics, planning, and operational support, often with military or field experience and relevant security clearances. Familiarity with mission planning software, secure communications equipment, and supply chain management systems is typically required. Adaptability, resilience, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills when working in challenging and dynamic environments. These abilities ensure mission success, safety, and seamless coordination under pressure during deployments.

Job description

What We Do

Gecko Robotics is helping the worldโ€™s most important organizations ensure the availability, reliability, and sustainability of critical infrastructure. Gecko's complete and connected solutions combine wall-climbing robots, industry-leading sensors, and an AI-powered data platform to provide customersย with a unique window into the current and future health of their physical assets. This enables real-time decision making to increase the efficiency and safety of operations, promote mission readiness, and protect the environment and civilization from the effects of infrastructure failure.

Role at a Glance

Our Forward Deployed Engineers are not support engineers, theyโ€™re builders. Forward Deployed Engineers build our business within the context of a single customer at a time. They seek out valuable problems that hold our customers back. The problems we work on are multi-domain, affecting cashflow, production, safety, and the environment. A Forward Deployed Engineer doesnโ€™t stop at finding problems, but goes on to create solutions and prove their value, owning the process from start to finish. Forward Deployed Engineers, by solving a specific version of the problem for a specific customer, also help to navigate Geckoโ€™s platforms - Geckoโ€™s tools that scale across customers.ย

What you will do
  • Solve Real Problems: We search for the highest impact problems we can find, we spend a lot of time with our customers to understand their true nature, we come up with new ways, and we donโ€™t quit until weโ€™ve reached impact.ย

  • Growth: The problems we work on are hard. No one has yet solved them. We are constantly learning and trying - and that includes learning about ourselves. We are a group who loves to grow - even if it requires hard work to do so.ย

Technologies We Use
  • Python, Javascript, Reactย

  • Google Cloud, Amazon Web Servicesย

About Youย
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in fields such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or relevant experience.ย

  • 3+ years of experience in a similar position.

  • Familiarity with data structures, storage systems, cloud infrastructure, front-end frameworks, and other technical tools.ย

  • Understanding of how technical decisions impact the user of what youโ€™re building.ย

  • Proficiency with programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript, or similar languages.ย

  • Ability to work effectively in teams of technical and non-technical individuals.ย

  • Skill and comfort working in a rapidly changing environment with dynamic objectives and iteration with users.ย

  • Demonstrated ability to continuously learn, work independently, and make decisions with minimal supervision.

  • Willingness and interest to travel as needed.

Who We Are

At Gecko, our people are our greatest investment. In addition to competitive compensation packages, we offer company equity, 401(k) matching, gender-neutral parental leave, full medical, dental, and vision insurance, mental health, ongoing professional development, family planning assistance, and flexible paid time off.ย

Gecko values collaboration, innovation, and partnership, and we believe we do our best work when we're together in person. Weโ€™re an office-first culture but understand that sometimes you may need to work from home. Many people are in the office five days a week, others need a bit moreย flexibility. Ultimately, we care about the outcomes we achieve - and creating a culture of autonomy and trust that enables that impact.

Gecko is committed to creating a culture of inclusion and belonging, and we are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.ย  We believe it is our collective responsibility to uphold these values and encourage candidates from all backgrounds to join us in our mission to protect todayโ€™s infrastructure and give form to tomorrowโ€™s. All qualified applicants will be treated with respect and receive equal consideration for employment without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, uniform service, veteran status, age, or any other protected characteristic per federal, state, or local law. If you are passionate about what you do and want to use your talents to support our critical mission, weโ€™d love to hear from you.

Compensation Range: $140K - $245K
