Deployed information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in deployed roles, and how can they be effectively managed?

Professionals in deployed roles often encounter challenges such as adapting to unfamiliar environments, managing logistical complexities, and balancing work responsibilities with personal well-being. Effective communication and collaboration with both local teams and headquarters are crucial for overcoming these obstacles. Many organizations provide pre-deployment training and ongoing support to help employees adjust and remain resilient. Building strong relationships on the ground and maintaining open lines of communication can greatly enhance both job performance and satisfaction.

What does 'deployed' mean in a job context?

In a job context, 'deployed' usually refers to an employee or worker who is assigned to a specific location, project, or task, often away from their main office or base of operations. This term is commonly used in industries such as the military, construction, oil and gas, and IT, where employees may be sent to different sites to perform their duties. Being deployed often involves temporary relocation and can sometimes include working in challenging environments. The length and conditions of deployment vary depending on the employer and industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Deployed Operations Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deployed Operations Specialist, you need a strong background in logistics, planning, and operational support, often with military or field experience and relevant security clearances. Familiarity with mission planning software, secure communications equipment, and supply chain management systems is typically required. Adaptability, resilience, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills when working in challenging and dynamic environments. These abilities ensure mission success, safety, and seamless coordination under pressure during deployments.

What is the difference between Deployed vs Software Developer?

AspectDeployedSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires programming knowledge, deployment tools, and sometimes certifications like AWS or AzureRequires programming skills, computer science degree, and certifications like Microsoft or Oracle
Work EnvironmentInvolves deploying applications in live environments, often collaborating with IT and operations teamsFocuses on coding, designing, and developing software applications in office or remote settings
Industry UsageCommon in IT, cloud services, and software companies during deployment phasesUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and other industries for software creation

Deployed professionals focus on releasing and managing software in live environments, requiring deployment skills and operational knowledge. Software Developers primarily create and develop software applications, emphasizing coding and design. Both roles are essential in the software lifecycle but differ in their core responsibilities and work settings.

Job description

About Mattermost Federal

Mattermost Federal builds secure collaboration platforms used by U.S. defense, intelligence, and national security organizations operating in the most demanding environments in the world.

About the Role

We are looking for Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) (located near Baltimore, MD or Herndon, VA) who want to solve real operational problems alongside mission teams. In this role you will work directly with operators, analysts, and engineers to deploy and build systems that are used every day in mission environments.

This is not a traditional engineering role. You will operate close to the mission, often inside classified environments, working through ambiguity and building solutions that have immediate operational impact.

The problems you will work on here are hard, ambiguous, and consequential.

What You'll Do

  • Work directly with defense and intelligence organizations to understand operational problems
  • Deploy and integrate Mattermost in classified and mission-critical environments
  • Build plugins, integrations, and automations that enable operational workflows
  • Prototype new capabilities quickly and iterate based on operator feedback
  • Debug complex systems operating in constrained environments
  • Help shape the evolution of the Mattermost platform based on mission needs

You will move between writing code, deploying infrastructure, and working directly with operators, often within the same week. Travel is typically approximately one week per month onsite with customers.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong engineering ability (Go, Python, TypeScript, or similar)
  • Comfort working across the full stack from infrastructure to applications
  • Ability to solve open-ended technical problems
  • Strong communication skills with both engineers and operators
  • Willingness to travel approximately one week per month

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with DoD, IC, or national security organizations
  • Experience deploying systems in secure or classified environments
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, distributed systems, and APIs
  • Experience building integrations or operational tooling

AI-Forward Engineering

Mattermost Federal is aggressively adopting AI-enabled workflows across mission operations. FDEs will be among the first engineers deploying and operationalizing AI capabilities in secure environments, including:

  • AI agents that summarize operational channels and generate SITREPs
  • AI-assisted mission timelines and decision logs
  • Knowledge retrieval across operational history
  • AI tools that help operators understand fast-moving mission data

Why This Role Exists

The best software is built close to the problem. Forward Deployed Engineers at Mattermost Federal work directly with the people using the systems we build. You will see problems firsthand, build solutions quickly, and deploy them into environments where reliability, security, and speed matter.

Compensation

Mattermost takes a market-based approach to pay. Actual compensation may vary based on location, skills, experience, qualifications, and market conditions.

Target Salary Range: $130,000 - $200,000 USD
