Description:

The Engle Dentistry Student Shadow Program provides students interested in dentistry, healthcare, laboratory technology, or healthcare administration with an opportunity to observe a professional dental practice environment. Participants will gain exposure to various aspects of patient care, clinical operations, dental laboratory workflows, and practice management while learning about career opportunities within the dental field.


This educational experience is observation-based and is designed to help students better understand the responsibilities, skills, and educational pathways associated with dental careers.


Participants may have the opportunity to observe:

  • General dentistry procedures
  • Dental implant and surgical procedures
  • Prosthodontic treatment and restorative dentistry
  • Dental hygiene appointments
  • Dental assisting responsibilities
  • Sterilization and infection control protocols
  • Digital dentistry and technology
  • In-house dental laboratory operations
  • Patient experience and customer service
  • Administrative and business operations
  • Team collaboration in a multi-specialty dental practice

Shadow experiences may range from a half-day observation to multiple scheduled visits, depending on educational needs, provider availability, and office approval.

Requirements:

Student Shadow Participants are expected to:

  • Arrive on time and maintain a professional appearance
  • Follow all office policies, safety procedures, and confidentiality requirements
  • Respect patient privacy and comply with HIPAA regulations
  • Remain attentive and engaged throughout the shadow experience
  • Ask appropriate questions during designated times
  • Maintain professional behavior with patients, staff, and providers
  • Follow instructions provided by supervising team members

Participants understand that this is an observational experience only. Student Shadow Participants may not:

  • Provide patient care
  • Assist in clinical procedures
  • Handle instruments or equipment without authorization
  • Access patient records
  • Photograph or record patients, staff, or procedures
  • Perform any duties requiring professional licensure or certification
