General Summary:
The Dental Assistant assists with oral surgery and other procedures under the direct supervision of a Dentist or Oral Surgeon. The person in this position is responsible for laboratory duties, obtaining and maintaining patient dental histories and escorting patients. The Dental Assistant is responsible for providing quality, compassionate care to patients consistent with the policies and procedures set by the organization.
Main Responsibilities:
• Greet patients with compassion and a friendly face
• Escort patients to and from front desk and procedure room/recovery area
• Obtain dental history and/or records from patient (review patient health history), ensure that the health history is updated for all returning patients
• Record patient charting and all physician notes in the Electronic Medical Record as directed
• Ensure the physician has reviewed treatment record, consents, and health history
• Prepare patients for examinations
• Actively participate in the patient’s experience by striving to keep your patient focused on optimal treatment while attending to their individual concerns and promoting the good qualities of your physician
• Maintain a clean, sterile, and cheerful environment where your patients feel comfortable; prepare patients for treatment, and assist the doctors - thereby enabling them to provide efficient, quality dental treatment.
• Hand instruments and materials to oral surgeon and keep patients' mouths dry and clear by using suction or other devices
• Hold airways during surgery and monitor patients during recovery
• Records findings and change barriers during surgery
• Prepare tray setups for dental procedures and maintain adequate supply levels in each operatory, replenishing as needed
• Complete radiographs and intra-oral pictures of patients as appropriate
• Sterilize instruments/equipment as needed
• Clean each operatory in accordance with the American Dental Association guidelines
• Perform laboratory duties: molds, grinding, prepare materials for making molds, etc.
• Use patient first values in assisting patients with needs
• Instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care
• Ensure to follow policies and procedures set by Holston Medical Group
• Maintain communication with Dentist/Oral Surgeon to ensure that patients’needs are taken care of
• Maintain an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor in accordance with Company policy
• Maintain strict compliance with State, Federal, and other regulations, (e.g., OSHA, WC, Dental Board, HIPAA, ADA, DOL, HR policies and practices)
Education/Experience/Knowledge:
• High School diploma or equivalent required
• DA/RDA preferred
• 0 -2 years’ experience
• CPR certified
• Must be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the dental field
• Must possess excellent communication skills
• Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with others
