Job Title: Lab Assistant

Job Description

This Lab Assistant role supports a high-volume central laboratory that provides clinical testing and bioanalysis services. You will work in a production-based environment, handling clinical specimens and performing essential tasks that support accurate and timely laboratory testing. The position combines hands-on specimen management with data entry, equipment checks, and adherence to strict safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and sort incoming clinical laboratory specimens in a high-volume, production-based environment.
  • Prepare specimens for testing and analysis according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Scan and enter specimen and patient information accurately into the laboratory information systems.
  • Verify that laboratory equipment is functioning properly and perform minor instrumentation maintenance as needed.
  • Troubleshoot specimen-related issues, including labeling, storage, and processing discrepancies.
  • Replenish test bench supplies and ensure adequate inventory of materials required for daily operations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with laboratory safety guidelines.
  • Complete required record logs and perform other administrative tasks as requested.
  • Follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Handle and manage samples through their lifecycle, including labeling, storage, retrieval, and disposition.
  • Collaborate with team members and management to meet daily metrics and productivity goals while maintaining quality.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 1 year of experience in sample management or warehouse operations.
  • Experience with specimen processing, sample management, or related laboratory support functions.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures accurately.
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
  • Capability to lift 30+ pounds and safely handle dry ice.
  • Proficiency with computers, including use of Microsoft Office or similar software.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and safe work environment and follow Standard Operating Procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in a life science discipline.
  • Experience working in a laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or similar biological sample environment.
  • Familiarity with labeling, inventory control, and specimen management processes.
  • Experience with sample preparation, sample storage, and specimen storage procedures.
  • Exposure to industrial freezers, dry ice handling, and cold-chain sample management.
  • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Experience with SAP or other inventory or laboratory management systems.
  • Phlebotomy experience or exposure to blood and biological samples.
  • Experience with data entry, data tracking, and documentation in a regulated environment.
  • Experience in warehouse operations related to biological or clinical materials.

Work Environment

This position is based in a fast-paced central laboratory environment that processes approximately 1,000 samples per day. The role involves mostly standing and walking throughout the shift and regular handling of dry ice and samples stored in industrial freezers. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will work both independently and as part of a collaborative team, with clear productivity metrics and quality expectations for each shift. The laboratory follows Good Laboratory Practice and Quality Management System standards, and uses technologies such as SAP, Microsoft Office, and other laboratory information and inventory systems. The facility emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, with an expectation of professional attire appropriate for a clinical laboratory setting, including any required personal protective equipment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
