Job description

JOB TITLE: DRIVER ASSISTANT

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

DATE: April, 2023

REPORTS TO: Floor Manager


ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF JOB

The ReStore Driver Assistant is fully committed to the mission of Habitat for Humanity as set forth in the affiliate covenant and is responsible to grow the organization by providing superior customer service in the collection of donated goods for resale in the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Represent HFHS in a professional manner and effectively relay the mission of HFHS to donors, customers, volunteers and the general public.
  • Deliver superior customer service to HFHS donors and customers.
  • Display professional, courteous communication in all interactions, including volunteers, future homeowners, and team members.
  • Adhere to HFHS policies and procedures.
  • Deliver superior customer service to HFHS donors and customers while coordinating, retrieving, and unloading residential and corporate donations.
  • Fulfill duties of Lead Driver when he/she is absent IF approved as driver.
  • Adhere to HFHS policies and procedures.


FLEET MAINTENANCE

  • Assist with inspection of assigned vehicle and equipment daily for proper operation, submit daily pre-trip inspection logs to Donations Coordinator.
  • Notify Driver or Lead Driver of any repairs, service or attention needed. Request removal of truck from service if truck cannot be safely operated.
  • Ensure that your assigned vehicle has an insurance card, accident instructions, reporting forms, and first aid kit.
  • Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of HFHS trucks/equipment and perform minor repairs when necessary.

DONATION PICK-UP

  • Understanding GPS, reading a map and basic navigation.
  • Communicate daily with the Driver before pick-up to obtain special instructions and changes in scheduling.
  • Evaluate the condition of the donation taking under consideration ReStore acceptance guidelines. **Please understand that sometimes the relationship or other factors with the donor may require us to take items of lesser value. If issues arise on acceptance, please phone the Dispatch Coordinator to respond or to redirect.
  • Screen donations to protect the organization from undue burden of accepting hazardous materials, non-saleable items, and items with disposal cost.
  • Effectively load, arrange and secure donation items to minimize damage during transport.
  • Follow direction of the Driver at the collection point and throughout the donation pick-up process.


DONATION PROCESSING

  • Inform Receiving staff of special instructions with off-loading items when NOT assisting with off-loading, in order to aid the Receiving Clerk in processing and pricing donated items.
  • Communicate with ReStore Donations Coordinator after pick-up any issues, need of rescheduling or need of any correspondence, including receipt or personal thank you to donor.
  • Assist with safely unloading and processing of donated items after completion of daily scheduled pick-ups unless assigned to different tasks by Floor Manager.
  • Ensure all donation collection vehicles have been off-loaded by the end of the day.
  • Give priority to processing, pricing, and pushing product to the sales floor over other duties, e.g., testing and repairing of donations and recycling.


DIRECT RESTORE VOLUNTEERS

  • Provide orientation, delegating jobs and setting expectations.
  • Utilize volunteer resources to accomplish the following:
  • Collection of donation
  • Acting as assistant collection driver when allowed, with priority over paid staff.
  • Assisting drivers with off-loading trucks
  • Processing of donated goods
  • Thoroughly cleaning donated goods.
  • Testing of electronics, appliances, etc. (Due to safety concerns, testing should only be executed by knowledgeable volunteers.)
  • Repairing donated goods when possible.
  • Researching unknown values.
  • Moving donated goods to the sales floor.
  • Processing of sold goods
  • Retrieving sold merchandise from the floor or sold area.
  • Assisting customers, matching sold tags to customer receipt.
  • Assisting customers with loading when appropriate. (Items are not to be loaded on top of vehicles or tied down by volunteers.)
  • Housekeeping
  • Maintaining work area through sweeping, trash disposal, and sorting of recycled items.
  • Assisting with clean-up of spills and other safety hazards.
  • Maintaining scrap metal areas and ensuring parking lots are maintained.
  • Maintaining trash dumpster area.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED WHICH COULD INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license, have a good driving record and ability to be approved as a covered driver under the commercial insurance policy.
  • Class E or commercial driver license is required within the first 90 days of employment.
  • In-house forklift certification required.
  • Experience driving a box truck or similar vehicle is preferred.
  • Prior customer service or retail sales experience preferred.
  • Must complete HFHS training program requirements for your job title.
