Job description

Position Summary:

To deliver a great customer experience, courteous, customer-focused deli associate who is committed to providing customers with the best service possible. Deli associates will clean and prepare workstations and displays, answer questions and respond to customer requests, and provide information to clients to ensure that they select the products that best fit their needs. Prepare customer and catering orders as instructed per recipe guidelines. Maintain a neat, clean, and visually appealing department, and perform other tasks as required in an efficient and safe manner, within Company policy. Promotes and maintains the B. Green’s mission, values, and culture. Provides exceptional communication and service to internal and external customers.

Essential Duties:

  • Providing responsive, exceptional service to deli counter customers by answering questions, making recommendations, providing samples, and responding to requests.
  • Recommending, slicing, weighing, packaging, and pricing meats and cheeses.
  • Preparing salads, sandwiches, dips, and other deli items per guidelines and recipes.
  • Preparing special orders and party trays.
  • Updating displays, cases, and other customer-facing areas to ensure new items and promotions are showcased.
  • Ensuring that work areas are ready to service customers by cleaning surfaces, equipment, and floors, removing trash, and confirming that tools are in working order.
  • Following all food safety and sanitation procedures established by the company and other regulatory agencies.
  • Cooperating with others to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Confirming that all displays, products, and services comply with company standards.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Clean and sanitize all work surfaces, utensils, and equipment in accordance with applicable regulatory and Quality Assurance (QA) standards.
  • Regularly lift, pull, push, and rotate merchandise that weights 25 lbs. and that occasionally weights 50 lbs.
  • Unload trucks and transport merchandise to Deli Department that weights 25 lbs. and that occasionally weighs 50 lbs.
  • Stand in designating work area for duration of scheduled shift, which may exceed 8 hours per day.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Local, State and Federal regulations as they pertain to the Deli operation.
  • Dress and groom according to company policy including uniform, name badge and hat or hair restraint requirements.
  • Perform duties in accordance with QA hand washing standards and use disposable gloves when handling food.
  • Complete all applicable department training programs.
  • Greet all Customers and provide them with prompt, courteous service, and assistance.
  • Assist Department Manager as needed.
  • When required, price items accurately and legibly using approved price marking devices.
  • Ensure that featured sale merchandise is attractively signed to stimulate sales.
  • Accurately record markups and markdowns, in-store use of merchandise, and bad merchandise/ spoilage write offs in accordance with Company policies.
  • Maintain Unit Price Labels (Tags) for all items, doing price changes as required.
  • Check prices and be knowledgeable about location of items in the store.
  • Fully stock and rotate all Deli products in cases, shelves, and other applicable displays according to tag allocation and department standards.
  • Unload and secure received product in appropriate refrigerated storage areas using power or hand jack, carts, or U-boats as needed.
  • Block and face all products in accordance to company policy or as assigned.
  • Be alert to temperatures and operating condition of refrigerated storage areas and display cases; promptly communicate any problems or failure to key person in charge.
  • Be knowledgeable of the various types of Deli products; including taste, preparation method or use, price differences, etc.
  • Maintain processes and procedures, and order merchandise to keep product in stock, including using Hand Held Terminal.
  • Utilize and maintain equipment as required by Department; report any equipment problems immediately.
  • Maintain required communication within the department and Company.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Company rules, policies, safety requirements, and security standards and all Local, State and Federal health and civil code regulations.
  • Perform duties in accordance with the Company’s HAZCOM program and adhere to manufacturer’s label instructions for the safe and proper use of all chemical products.
  • Complete all applicable department training programs.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with B. Green & Company, Inc. Policy and Procedures, Safety Procedures.
  • Understand and adhere to Company shrink guidelines as relates to Deli Department operations.
  • Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
  • Work overtime as assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred, not required.
  • 0-2 years customer service experience, Grocery Store or Retail preferred.
  • 1 year experience working in Deli department, preferred.
  • Ability to proficiently read, write, speak, analyze, interpret, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to perform basic math.
  • Ability to interact with Customers in a friendly and helpful way.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to work all assigned work schedules and comply with all time and attendance policies.
  • Ability and willingness to learn multiple tasks.
  • Must meet minimum age requirements to perform specific job functions, must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Excellent customer service skills in order to work with a diverse population
  • Able to work a varied work schedule that changes, and a variety of shifts
  • Attention to detail and able to learn where store products are located to provide information to customers.

  • Ability to work in varying temperatures.
  • Ability to work with fresh, dried and/or processed products, spices and powdered substances without negative allergic consequences.
  • Ability to climb a ladder to retrieve items from overhead racking and storage areas.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and climb stairs is required.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated coolers and high moisture rooms for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to tolerate dust and cleaning agents during routine housekeeping duties.

Work Environment: Work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The work environment is based in a retail store. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.

Work Schedule: Part time role to equate to less than 29.9 hours a week, on average. Full time role to equate to 30 hours a week or more, on average. Hours may fluctuate based upon business needs. Must have ability to work a varied work schedule that changes, and a variety of shifts.
