What is delegated examining?

Delegated Examining is a hiring authority used by U.S. federal agencies to fill competitive service positions with applicants from outside the government. Under this authority, specially trained human resources personnel, called Delegated Examining Units (DEUs), are given the ability to publicly announce jobs, assess applicant qualifications, and make selections based on merit. Delegated Examining is governed by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and ensures a fair, open, and competitive hiring process. This process helps agencies quickly hire qualified candidates for a wide range of federal jobs.

To thrive as a Delegated Examining (DE) Unit HR Specialist, you need comprehensive knowledge of federal hiring regulations, recruitment strategies, and OPM assessment procedures, typically supported by experience in federal HR and relevant training or certification in DE authority.
