What is defense contractor sales?

Defense contractor sales involve the marketing and selling of products, services, or technologies to military organizations, government agencies, or allied nations. Sales professionals in this field typically work for companies that manufacture or supply defense equipment, such as weapons, vehicles, electronics, or cybersecurity solutions. Their responsibilities include identifying potential clients, understanding government procurement processes, negotiating contracts, and ensuring compliance with regulations like the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). The work often requires security clearances and a strong understanding of both technical products and governmental policies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a defense contractor sales professional?

To excel in Defense Contractor Sales, you need a deep understanding of military procurement processes, government contracting regulations, and a track record in B2G (business-to-government) sales, often supported by a relevant degree and security clearance. Familiarity with CRM software, federal acquisition systems such as SAM.gov, and compliance certifications like ITAR or FCPA is typically required. Exceptional relationship-building, negotiation, and communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for navigating complex sales cycles, maintaining regulatory compliance, and building trust with government clients.

What are some common challenges faced by defense contractor sales professionals when navigating government procurement processes?

Defense Contractor Sales professionals often encounter complex and lengthy government procurement processes, which can involve strict compliance requirements, extensive documentation, and multiple approval stages. Navigating these procedures requires a strong understanding of federal acquisition regulations and the ability to build relationships with key decision-makers. Staying updated on changes in policy, adapting proposals to meet specific contract needs, and managing long sales cycles are crucial for success in this role.

ABOUT THE TEAM
Salesforce's Public Sector business unit delivers PaaS and SaaS solutions to the U.S. Department of War-built to meet DoW Impact Level authorization requirements. We help warfighters and program offices modernize operations, accelerate mission outcomes, and put AI to work at the tactical and enterprise level.
THE ROLE
We need an SE who can operate across both sides of the DoW ecosystem-engaging directly with military program offices and acquisition teams on one end, and defense contractors on the other. You'll be the technical quarterback on complex DoW pursuits: running discovery, architecting cloud solutions, building POCs, and eliminating technical barriers to adoption. Agentic AI is now a core part of our platform story-you need to be able to build with it, not just talk about it.
WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Engage directly with DoW customers (combatant commands, military services, defense agencies) to understand mission requirements, program constraints, and technical environment
  • Map requirements to the Salesforce portfolio: Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, MuleSoft, Tableau, Agentforce, Data360, and Government Cloud Plus Defense
  • Design, build, and deliver tailored demos and proof-of-concept solutions for DoW use cases-HR, logistics, sustainment, case/investigation management, acquisition lifecycle, program management, and workforce operations
  • Architect and prototype Agentforce solutions for DoW environments-including agentic workflow design, grounding/RAG patterns for controlled unclassified data, prompt governance, and production readiness considerations for mission-critical deployments
  • Clearly articulate Salesforce's security and compliance posture- DoW IL2/IL4/IL5 authorizations, data sovereignty, and cloud security architecture-to technical evaluators, ISSOs, and program offices
  • Support RFI/RFP responses by contributing technical content, demo scenarios, and architecture documentation
  • Partner with Account Executives, Capture Managers, and Customer Success in a team-selling environment to support pipeline and pursuit strategy
  • Build reusable POC assets, playbooks, and best-practice guides to scale delivery across the DoW customer base
  • Feed Voice of the Customer insights back to Salesforce Product and inform messaging plays with Product Marketing

WHAT YOU BRING
Required

  • 7+ years of experience as a Solution or Sales Engineer for a CRM, enterprise SaaS, or mission IT company-with DoW or defense contractor customers strongly preferred
  • Hands-on Agentforce, Data Cloud, and Salesforce Platform builder: able to prototype agentic workflows, automation, and data pipelines from scratch
  • Practical AI fluency: working knowledge of LLMs, RAG/grounding, agentic system design, and production behavior-including safety, reliability, and governance considerations relevant to DoW operational environments
  • Deep discovery and MVP scoping: able to run technical and business discovery, define agentic use cases, set measurable success criteria, and produce a feasible architecture and activation plan
  • Familiarity with DoW compliance frameworks
  • Strong written, verbal, and whiteboard communication skills-able to engage from developer to C-suite, and from technical evaluator to COTR
  • Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced, team-selling environment managing multiple pursuits simultaneously
  • U.S. citizenship required; ability to obtain a DoW security clearance preferred
  • Ability to travel domestically, including to military installations and industry events

Preferred

  • Salesforce certifications: Administrator, Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Platform Developer, or Public Sector Solutions
  • Experience with Apex, Lightning Web Components, or equivalent engineering background; comfort with SQL and/or Python
  • Experience with agentic engineering tooling (Cursor, Claude Code, Agentforce Vibes, or similar)
  • Familiarity with GovCloud, AWS GovCloud, or Azure Government environments

EDUCATION
B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, MIS, required.
