Description: 

Integrated Defense Systems ( IDS) Mechanical Engineering Directorate (MED) provides engineering design, integration and production to a wide range of hardware in Integrated Defense Systems (IDS). The Mechanical Engineering Directorate uses state-of the-art tools, processes, technology, and IDS Six Sigma principles. MED's capabilities encompass a broad range of technical disciplines which include engineering, manufacturing, technical services, materials, processes, analysis, test and documentation.

The Platform Integration Department leads mechanical design, development and integration of platform systems. This includes shelter systems, hardware integration, interconnects, as well as facility development and site integration. The department is seeking motivated and driven mechanical engineers with technical expertise and experience in hardware design, integration and production support. As a senior mechanical engineer the individual will support and lead multi-disciplined engineering teams and provide mechanical solutions and services across all program phases. Areas of focus can encompass development of next generation systems, design development for existing products, transition to production, product support, vendor oversight, and field upgrades.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform complex mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, sub-assemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements
  • Oversee small to mid-sized cross functional engineering teams as a technical execution lead through all phases of development from proposal generation, program start up, requirements allocation, preliminary and detailed development, through production.
  • Lead the mechanical or cross functional engineering team as the technical focal point within an integrated product team environment
  • Support the factory and suppliers with product integration domestically and internationally
  • Interface with other engineering disciplines, non-technical disciplines, and suppliers to develop design solutions and resolve technical challenges
  • Work with limited supervision and meet commitments for assigned schedule, financial, and technical goals
  • Support and participate in design peer reviews and conduct trade studies to make sound technical decisions
  • Apply knowledge and experience in technical problem solving and hardware development in a fast paced, team environment
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date. Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligiblefor a security clearance.

Qualifications

Eight (8)+ years of experience in a Mechanical Engineering role with minimum three (3) years designing and developing mechanical equipment, preferably for use in Military environments
Previous experience including concept definition through detailed design and transition to production and production support
Broad background in mechanical design, development, material selection, or manufacturing processes
Experience with CAD design tools or associated product data management tools
Engineering project management experience or schedule and budget responsibility

Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Willingness to travel (domestic and international)
Excellent communication, technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills
Working knowledge of Military and Commercial Specifications
Experience in design, fabrication, and integration of electronic assemblies, shelter assemblies, power distribution equipment packaging, and rack systems
Knowledge in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
Advanced problem solving skills
Experience using CREO CAD design and documentation tools
Experience with PDM or similar product data management tool
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel/Power Point/Project)
Experience with current manufacturing systems and processes
Reliability or failure analysis experience
Desire and ability to work in a fast paced production environment
Ability to work collaboratively in an Integrated Product Team environment, interfacing with multiple Engineering disciplines, Operations, Integrated Supply Chain, and Quality
Able to work well with people and achieve results with a minimum of conflicts and within schedule
Previous experience includes adaptability and willingness to work varying assignments
Demonstrated team player, self-driven leader with excellent collaboration skills
Team leadership; experience leading a multi-disciplined, technical team with the ability to develop, empower, motivate and monitor the team.
Proven ability to lead technical solutions to complex user requirements
Familiarity with managing engineering budgets with Earned Value Management (EVMS) and Estimate at Complete (EAC) process
Experience in supporting or leading proposals
Familiarity with Risk & Opportunity Management
Advanced degree in mechanical engineering, or hardware systems design
Existing secret clearance

Required Education:
BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field
