What is a deep learning accelerator?

Deep Learning Accelerators are specialized hardware or systems designed to speed up the processing and training of deep learning algorithms, such as neural networks. They are optimized for the heavy computational demands of tasks like image recognition, natural language processing, and other AI applications. Examples include Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), and custom-designed chips like Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). These accelerators enable faster data processing, lower power consumption, and improved efficiency compared to general-purpose CPUs. As AI applications grow, the use of deep learning accelerators is becoming increasingly important in both research and industry.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a deep learning accelerator engineer?

To thrive as a Deep Learning Accelerator Engineer, you need a strong background in computer engineering, digital design, and machine learning, typically supported by a degree in computer science or electrical engineering. Experience with hardware description languages (such as Verilog or VHDL), FPGA/ASIC toolchains, and familiarity with deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch is essential. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and translating algorithmic requirements into efficient hardware solutions. These skills are vital to designing high-performance, energy-efficient hardware accelerators that advance AI capabilities and meet industry demands.

What are the main challenges faced when optimizing deep learning models for hardware accelerators?

One of the primary challenges in this role is bridging the gap between deep learning model requirements and the constraints of specialized hardware, such as GPUs, TPUs, or custom ASICs. This often involves model quantization, memory optimization, and adapting algorithms to exploit hardware parallelism while maintaining accuracy and efficiency. Collaboration with both hardware engineers and software developers is essential to ensure models run efficiently on target platforms, and staying current with evolving accelerator architectures is key to long-term success.

What is the difference between Deep Learning Accelerator vs Machine Learning Engineer?

Job description

Hourly Pay Range:
$37.47 - $58.08 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.
Position Highlights:
  • Sign-on Bonus: $15,000
  • Position: Radiation Therapist, Oncology
  • Location: Northwest Community Hospital - Arlington Heights, IL
  • Full Time | 40 hours/week
  • Hours: Shifts will vary Monday-Friday, from 6:30am-3:00pm, 7:00am-3:30pm, 7:30am-4:00pm, 8:00am-4:30pm, with a Saturday requirement every 7 weeks.

Summary:
Our department offers a dynamic and diverse clinical environment with multiple advanced treatment platforms - Varian Halcyon linear accelerator, Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator, and Accuray CyberKnife robotic radiotherapy system - along with a dedicated Varian Bravos HDR brachytherapy suite. We also utilize a Philips wide-bore CT simulator to support high-quality, patient-centered treatment planning and simulation. Varian Aria & Epic EMR systems support documentation and workflow across the entire department for seamless integration of care.
This variety of technology supports a full spectrum of advanced radiation therapy techniques, including CBCT and kV/MV imaging, IMRT, prone treatments, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), as well as HDR brachytherapy applications such as cylinders and tandem and ring procedures. We also integrated the Varian IDENTIFY system for surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT), enabling respiratory gating and deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) techniques to enhance treatment precision and patient safety.
You'll be joining a collaborative team that includes three radiation oncologists, dedicated nursing support, three physics, three dosimetry staff, and a core team of approximately eight radiation therapists. We treat an average of 65-75 adult patients per day across all treatment units, allowing for a steady yet manageable workflow in a solely adult patient population.
Standard treatment hours run from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Therapist schedules rotate through staggered shifts (6:30-3:00, 7:00-3:30, 7:30-4:00, and 8:00-4:30), supporting both coverage and work-life balance. The therapy team participates in a rotating Saturday call schedule (~once every 7-8 weeks). The department is closed on holidays. At this time, therapists are based at this location and do not rotate between sites.
We actively collaborate with radiation therapy students, providing a supportive clinical environment where they can build confidence, strengthen technical skills, and connect classroom learning to real world patient care. Our team values teaching and mentorship, helping students grow into competent and compassionate future therapists.
Northwest Community is part of the Endeavor Health system, a newer integrated network built on a strong community foundation. This site itself has proudly served the community for nearly 70 years. Looking ahead, we are entering an exciting period of growth. Plans are underway for a new state-of-the-art cancer institute on our campus, with construction anticipated to begin in late 2026 or early 2027 and patient care projected to begin in early 2029. This expansion will bring new technology, expanded services, and additional opportunities for professional growth as patient volumes increase.
