What is decorative lighting?

Decorative lighting refers to lighting fixtures and designs that are used primarily to enhance the aesthetics and ambiance of a space, rather than just providing functional illumination. This type of lighting includes chandeliers, pendant lights, wall sconces, string lights, and other artistic fixtures. Decorative lighting is often used in homes, restaurants, hotels, and event spaces to create mood, highlight architectural features, and add visual interest. While it does contribute to overall lighting needs, its main purpose is to enhance the visual appeal of the environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a decorative lighting specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Decorative Lighting Specialist, you need a solid understanding of lighting design, electrical principles, and spatial aesthetics, often supported by experience or education in interior design or related fields. Familiarity with lighting design software (such as AutoCAD or Dialux), various lighting fixtures, and industry safety standards is important. Creativity, strong communication, and attention to detail are standout soft skills that help in tailoring solutions to client needs. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering visually appealing, safe, and functional lighting designs that meet client expectations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in decorative lighting, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in decorative lighting often encounter challenges such as balancing aesthetic design with functional requirements, adhering to safety codes, and staying current with evolving lighting technologies. Collaborating closely with architects, interior designers, and electricians is essential to ensure designs are both beautiful and compliant with regulations. Additionally, keeping up with trends and sustainable lighting practices is important for career growth. Proactively seeking continuing education and networking within the industry helps address these challenges and fosters professional development.

  • Establish clear goals, performance expectations, territory plans, and business reviews with representative agencies.
  • Support rep agencies in positioning Hunter products as the Basis of Design and defending specifications through project quotation, value engineering, and substitution reviews.
  • Assess market coverage and recommend changes to agency representation where needed.

Channel and Project Execution

  • Provide market feedback to support product development, pricing, technical documentation, marketing tools, and commercial sales programs.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Product Management, Marketing, Supply Chain, Customer Service, Finance, Channel, and other internal teams to improve customer execution and channel performance.
  • Coordinate internally to address product, pricing, service, and fulfillment needs for commercial opportunities.
  • Represent Hunter at industry events, training sessions, trade shows, architectural and engineering presentations, and other customer activities.

  • Experience using project lead-generation platforms such as Dodge Construction Network, ConstructConnect, or similar tools.
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen, including pricing strategy, profitability analysis, forecasting, and business planning.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude and a basic understanding of electrical systems.
  • Ability to travel approximately 50 percent.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and comfortable working on ladders at heights of 15 to 20 feet.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Existing relationships within the architectural, engineering, lighting design, or commercial specification community.
  • Experience leading multiple independent manufacturers’ representative agencies across a broad or nationwide territory.
  • Experience with ceiling fans, decorative lighting, controls, ventilation, or related product categories.
  • Familiarity with commercial specifications, basis-of-design positioning, submittals, alternates, value engineering, and specification defense.
