What is a decom?

Decom jobs refer to positions involved in decommissioning, which is the process of safely dismantling or retiring industrial facilities, infrastructure, or equipment that are no longer in use. These roles are common in industries such as oil and gas, nuclear energy, and maritime sectors. Decom professionals ensure that decommissioning is carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental and regulatory standards. Their work includes planning, logistics, risk assessment, and site restoration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a decom engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Decommissioning (Decom) Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering, project management, and health and safety regulations, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in asset decommissioning. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, project management tools, and certifications such as NEBOSH or offshore safety training are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for coordinating teams and ensuring regulatory compliance. These skills and qualifications are crucial to safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively dismantle assets while minimizing environmental impact and adhering to legal standards.

What are some common challenges faced by decom professionals during large-scale project execution?

Decommissioning professionals often encounter challenges such as ensuring safety compliance in hazardous environments, managing complex logistics for the removal and disposal of materials, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders including regulatory agencies, contractors, and environmental specialists. Projects can be subject to tight timelines and evolving regulations, requiring adaptability and strong project management skills. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is essential to address technical, environmental, and budgetary constraints effectively.
