Deck Assistant information

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a deck assistant?

To thrive as a Deck Assistant, you generally need physical stamina, basic seamanship skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with deck equipment, safety protocols, and certifications such as Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) are commonly required. Teamwork, attention to detail, and strong communication skills are crucial soft skills for collaborating effectively and ensuring safety onboard. These qualifications and skills are vital for maintaining vessel operations, preventing accidents, and supporting overall maritime safety.

What is a deck assistant?

Deck assistants, also known as deckhands, are crew members on ships or boats who support the deck crew in maintaining the vessel and ensuring its safe operation. Their duties often include cleaning and maintaining the deck, assisting with docking and undocking procedures, handling cargo, and helping with safety drills. Deck assistants are essential for the smooth running of maritime operations and work under the direction of senior deck officers.

What are the daily responsibilities of a deck assistant?

As a Deck Assistant, your daily tasks often include maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the deck, assisting with mooring and unmooring operations, and supporting loading or unloading cargo. You may also help with routine maintenance such as painting, minor repairs, and checking equipment. Collaboration with other deck crew and following instructions from senior officers is key, and you'll often rotate between various tasks depending on the ship's schedule and needs.

What is the difference between Deck Assistant vs Deckhand?

AspectDeck AssistantDeckhand

Work EnvironmentAssists with deck operations, maintenance, and safety tasks on shipsPerforms general deck duties, maintenance, and cargo handling on ships
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly used in commercial shipping, cruise lines, and yachtsWidely used across maritime industries including cargo, cruise, and fishing vessels

Both Deck Assistants and Deckhands work on ships, assisting with deck operations and safety. The main difference lies in their roles' scope and responsibilities, with Deck Assistants often focusing on supporting senior crew and safety tasks, while Deckhands handle more hands-on physical work. Certifications and work environments are similar, making these roles closely related but distinct in daily duties.

Job description

Job Title: Deck Supervisor
Reports to: Assistant Manager - Aquatics
FLSA Status: Part time, Non-Exempt
Summary: We’re looking for a confident, organized, and coaching-minded leader to join our team as a Deck Supervisor. This is a shift leadership role at its core - you’ll oversee the flow of lessons, lead and develop your deck team, and make sure every student and family has a golden experience every single visit. If you're someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment, takes ownership seriously, communicates with clarity, and gets energy from helping others grow, this role is built for you.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Own the shift from start to finish - prepare the deck, lead pre-shift and post-shift meetings, and keep lessons running on time and on brand.
  • Coach Swim Instructors, Deck Assistants, and Lifeguards through direct observation and honest, specific feedback that drives real improvement.
  • Interact with parents and guardians at the end of every lesson to discuss student progress and act as a GSS ambassador who ensures member satisfaction.
  • Complete daily Deck Supervisor logs and monitor student attendance on assigned shifts.
  • Conduct periodic evaluations of Swim Instructors and provide actionable feedback.
  • Coordinate facility cleanliness tasks and ensure the pool environment meets our standards throughout the shift.
  • Help arrange coverage for absent team members to keep shifts running smoothly.
  • Step in as a substitute Swim Instructor or Lifeguard when needed.
  • Identify areas for improvement and help implement corrective action through training.
What We’re Looking For:
  • Current Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required and must remain active.
  • Background in youth sports coaching, camp leadership, or teaching is a plus.
  • A natural coach who gives feedback early, often, and with intention.
  • Calm under pressure and able to make decisions quickly when it matters.
  • Must be available for evening and weekend shifts.
  • While performing this job, the employee is regularly exposed to heat, humidity, and chlorine. Noise level is usually moderate.
 What Success Looks Like:
  • Every shift runs smoothly because preparation happened before the first student arrived.
  • Your deck team feels supported, coached, and clear on expectations before every lesson.
  • Families trust us because the experience is consistent and communication is proactive.
  • Students are progressing because instructors are delivering quality lessons under your guidance.
Our Culture: At Goldfish Swim School, we believe every child deserves to be safe in and around water. Our team is passionate, people-first, and committed to a golden experience every day. As a Deck Supervisor, you’re the leader who makes that standard real on the pool deck - every lesson, every shift, every family.
