Description
Collecting, verifying, and maintaining accurate GPS and GIS data for Decatur Utilities gas, water, wastewater, and electric infrastructure. This position performs field mapping and asset inventory using GPS/GNSS equipment paired with mobile GIS applications. The GIS Intern works closely with field crews and office staff to ensure utility assets are accurately documented and maintained within the Enterprise GIS system.

  • Collect high-accuracy GPS/GNSS data for utility infrastructure including gas, water, wastewater, and electric assets.
  • Locate and map utility features such as valves, hydrants, meters, manholes, transformers, poles, service lines, and underground facilities.
  • Perform field verification of existing GIS utility data and update discrepancies between field assets and system maps.
  • Utilize GPS equipment, tablets, and mobile GIS applications to capture spatial and attribute information.
  • Maintain accurate field notes, sketches, photographs, and supporting documentation for utility assets.
  • Read and interpret utility maps, mylars, as-built drawings, construction plans, and engineering schematics.
  • Follow company policies, industry standards, safety, and applicable regulations related to utility mapping and data integrity.
  • Edits and creates GIS based data using ArcGIS Pro

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Successful completion of Sophomore year (60 credit hours) in a
    Geographic Information Systems or equivalent related Geographic Information Systems field from an accredited college or university.
  • Ability to read, interpret and comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to analyze and prepare reports and short business correspondence.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel) as required to perform job tasks. This includes using software applications for email, word processing, database tracking and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, percentages and decimals.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry such as area, circumference and volume to practical business situations.
  • Ability to apply some judgement to carry out detailed and well-established procedures and methods, such as completing detailed forms and recording complex data.
  • Available to work scheduled times; good organizational and time management skills; ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously; maintain professional business appearance and image; subject to random drug testing and driver's license checks. Field work required.
