Decarbonization Engineer information

What does a Decarbonization Engineer do?

A Decarbonization Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing strategies to reduce carbon emissions in industrial processes, buildings, or energy systems. They assess current operations, identify opportunities for emission reductions, and develop technologies or processes that support the transition to cleaner energy sources. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, environmental experts, and stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability goals. Decarbonization Engineers play a crucial role in helping organizations achieve net-zero or low-carbon objectives.

What jobs will no longer exist in 2030?

Decarbonization engineers are likely to see reduced demand for roles focused on traditional fossil fuel extraction and combustion-based power generation as renewable energy sources and clean technologies replace them. Jobs involving manual or outdated energy infrastructure maintenance may also decline, while roles requiring skills in renewable energy systems, energy storage, and environmental compliance are expected to grow. Overall, roles tied to fossil fuels and high-emission industries are at risk of obsolescence by 2030.

How does a Decarbonization Engineer typically collaborate with other departments to implement sustainability initiatives?

Decarbonization Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams, including operations, facilities management, and sustainability departments, to design and execute projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions. They often facilitate workshops, analyze energy data, and provide technical guidance to ensure that emission-reduction strategies align with both regulatory requirements and organizational goals. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as these engineers translate complex technical solutions into actionable plans that other departments can implement effectively.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. These positions often require advanced degrees, certifications, and working in high-demand industries or senior management capacities.

What is the difference between Decarbonization Engineer vs Sustainability Engineer?

AspectDecarbonization EngineerSustainability Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in engineering, environmental science, or related field; certifications in energy management or environmental standardsBachelor's in environmental engineering, sustainability, or related; certifications in LEED, sustainability management
Work EnvironmentIndustrial sites, energy plants, consulting firms focused on reducing carbon emissionsCorporate offices, consulting firms, NGOs working on broader sustainability initiatives
Industry UsagePrimarily in energy, manufacturing, and industrial sectorsAcross various sectors including corporate, government, and non-profit organizations

While both roles focus on environmental impact, Decarbonization Engineers specifically target reducing carbon emissions through technical solutions, whereas Sustainability Engineers adopt a broader approach to overall environmental and social sustainability strategies.

What is the highest paying job in renewable energy?

In renewable energy, senior roles such as Renewable Energy Project Director or Chief Sustainability Officer tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures annually. These positions typically require extensive experience, advanced technical knowledge, and leadership skills in project management, policy, or engineering.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. These roles typically require extensive experience, advanced skills, and sometimes leadership responsibilities or working in high-cost-of-living areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Decarbonization Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Decarbonization Engineer, you need expertise in energy systems, carbon reduction strategies, and environmental engineering, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in sustainability projects. Familiarity with emissions modeling software, life cycle assessment tools, and certifications like LEED or ISO 14001 are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, project management, and stakeholder communication skills set outstanding professionals apart in this role. These capabilities are crucial for designing and implementing effective decarbonization solutions that meet regulatory standards and drive environmental impact.

Job Summary - Senior Account Manager - Gas Utilities (Eastern North America)

Landis+Gyr is seeking an experienced gas utility professional to lead strategic account engagement with Investor Owned Gas Distribution Utilities across Eastern North America. This role is ideal for candidates with direct experience inside a gas utility-particularly in metering, operations, engineering, or AMI-who are interested in applying their industry knowledge in a customer facing, commercially focused role. The successful candidate will leverage a deep understanding of gas utility operations, regulatory environments, and business challenges to guide utilities through complex metering and AMI programs. Sales success in this role is driven by credibility, insight into how utilities operate, and the ability to align technology solutions with operational, safety, and business outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

Serve as the primary strategic point of contact for assigned Investor Owned Gas Utilities across Eastern North America
Develop a deep understanding of customer gas utility operations, including metering programs, field operations, asset management, regulatory drivers, and organizational decision making
Engage credibly with utility stakeholders across operations, engineering, metering, IT, regulatory, supply chain, and executive leadership
Lead sales efforts for complex gas metering and AMI programs, including new deployments, technology refreshes, and long term modernization initiatives
Meet or exceed annual and multi year objectives for revenue, bookings, and backlog growth through strategic account development
Translate customer operational challenges into solution strategies that improve safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, and total cost of ownership
Coordinate with internal technical, product, and delivery teams to ensure solutions are aligned with customer needs and implementation realities
Maintain accurate account plans, opportunity forecasts, and customer records; provide regular updates and reporting to management
Represent Landis+Gyr professionally and credibly in all customer interactions
Support and adhere to the Company's Code of Conduct and Ethics Policy
   Perform other duties as required

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) from a four year college or university, or equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience
5-10 years of experience working within a Natural Gas Distribution Utility in North America, or in a closely related role supporting gas utility operations
Background may include gas metering operations, field services, AMR/AMI programs, engineering, pressure and measurement, asset management, or utility program leadership
Experience engaging with regulated utility environments and understanding how business, regulatory, and operational priorities intersect
Prior commercial, account management, or customer facing experience is a plus, but utility domain expertise is the primary requirement

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong understanding of gas distribution utility operations and business drivers
Working knowledge of gas metering technologies, including diaphragm, rotary, and ultrasonic meters, as well as AMR/AMI systems and communications architectures
Ability to understand and articulate how metering and AMI investments impact safety, reliability, compliance, operational efficiency, and long term utility economics
Comfort engaging in consultative discussions with utility stakeholders, grounded in real world operational experience
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documentation, business cases, and financial justifications
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency with personal computers and standard business software, including Microsoft Office
Ability to work independently while collaborating with cross functional internal teams

Accountabilities / Measures:

Achievement of assigned revenue, booking, and strategic account objectives
Quality of customer relationships and depth of engagement across utility organizations
Strategic alignment of opportunities with customer business and operational priorities

Business Relationships:

Regular interaction with gas utility customers, internal Landis+Gyr teams, and industry contacts
Engagement with utility executives, operations leadership, engineering teams, and regulatory stakeholders
