What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Debugging position, and why are they important?

To excel in a debugging role, you need strong proficiency in programming languages, software troubleshooting, and analytical thinking, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with debugging tools such as GDB, Visual Studio Debugger, and log analyzers is essential, and relevant certifications like Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) can be beneficial. Attention to detail, perseverance, effective communication, and teamwork are valuable soft skills for identifying and resolving complex issues. These abilities are crucial to efficiently finding root causes, minimizing downtime, and maintaining high software quality.

What is a Debugging job?

A debugging job involves identifying, analyzing, and fixing errors or bugs in software, hardware, or systems to ensure optimal functionality. Debuggers use various tools and techniques to troubleshoot issues, improve performance, and prevent future defects. This role often requires strong problem-solving skills, knowledge of programming languages, and experience with debugging tools. Debuggers may work closely with developers, testers, and engineers to enhance system reliability and efficiency.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone in a debugging role?

Professionals in a debugging role spend their days analyzing software issues, reproducing bugs, and using specialized tools to trace and resolve errors in code. They commonly collaborate with software developers, testers, and product managers to understand bug reports and ensure solutions meet requirements. Debuggers may also write automated tests, contribute to documentation, and participate in code reviews. This position requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities, as timely bug resolution is critical to a team’s workflow and product quality.

Job description

Position Overview:
As a Software Engineer II, you'll take on a hands-on technical role in building and evolving our Third Party Risk Management (SaaS) platform using Laravel (PHP). You design and deliver scalable, maintainable backend services and APIs, and take ownership of features from implementation through deployment and monitoring. You'll contribute meaningfully to our mission of making governance effortless for our customers, working in a team that owns its services end to end - from architecture and implementation to monitoring and continuous improvement. This role is ideal for a mid-level engineer who writes solid code, mentors others, and embraces AI-powered tools to work smarter and faster. You'll guide junior engineers, shape architectural discussions, and help scale modern development practices, including responsible use of AI in workflows.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain features and APIs within our Laravel applications
  • Own and deliver well-defined stories independently, with a clear grasp of team architecture, frameworks, and tools
  • Improve application performance, scalability, and reliability
  • Actively contribute to architectural discussions and technical decision-making
  • Review code, uphold engineering standards, and contribute to testing and CI/CD practices
  • Mentor and support junior engineers (Software Engineer I) through feedback and knowledge sharing
  • Use AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) to improve productivity across coding, debugging, testing, and documentation while critically evaluating outputs
  • Understand core LLM concepts (e.g., tokens, context length, hallucinations), recognize safe vs. unsafe use cases, and flag ethical, privacy, or cost concerns
  • Identify and implement improvements that enhance developer experience and system stability
  • Maintain healthy development flow by adhering to Agile processes and driving iterative enhancements

Required Experience/Skills:

  • 3-5 years of professional software engineering experience in an agile, fast-paced environment
  • Strong experience with PHP and Laravel, within the TALL stack (Tailwind, Alpine.js, Laravel, Livewire)
  • Solid understanding of relational databases (MySQL / MariaDB), including query optimisation and data modelling
  • Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and working with system integrations
  • Practical experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms
  • Proficiency with Git and collaborative development workflows
  • Experience working with Docker or containerised environments
  • Comfortable debugging production issues and working with logs, monitoring, and observability tools
  • Working knowledge of frontend technologies (e.g., Vue, React, or Blade)
  • Collaboration & communication: Comfortable discussing architectural decisions, documenting designs (potentially with AI assistance), and presenting technical ideas clearly.
AI & Engineering Maturity
  • Practical experience using AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) in daily development workflows
  • Ability to use AI for tasks such as debugging, test generation, documentation, and research
  • Understands core AI concepts (e.g., LLM behavior, hallucinations, limitations)
  • Critically evaluates and validates AI-generated outputs before applying them
  • Aware of privacy, security, and data sensitivity when using AI tools
  • Uses AI to improve efficiency while maintaining engineering quality and ownership
Your Work Environment
  • This is an on-site / hybrid role based in Amsterdam. Candidates must already be residing in the Netherlands
  • A fast-growing SaaS company where you can make a meaningful impact on both product and engineering, while earning a good salary
  • A collaborative team with room for ownership, initiative, and technical growth
  • An inspiring office in Amsterdam
