The Controller is responsible for managing the accounting staff and ensuring all daily financial transactions for the accounting department are completed in a timely and accurate manner. This role supports and provides backup for all accounting staff.  In addition, the Controller responds to inquiries from the Dealer Principal and other Senior Managers.  All aspects of payroll preparation including completion of benefit and monthly government filings are the responsibility of this position. 

As this role supports and interprets the accounting postings generated by system activities from all departments, the Controller requires an in-depth understanding of the automotive industry and the related DMS & IT systems.  The Controller is an experienced, mature, “Driver” who is detailed, analytical and takes ownership of this key Management role in our automotive business.

(And future expansion) We run a central accounting approach, with currently two Toyota stores. The main office is located in Cochrane Alberta. The second store and support staff are located in Smithers BC. 

What You'll Do

  • Lead and support the day-to-day operations of the Accounting Department.
  • Prepare accurate monthly financial statements and manufacturer reporting.
  • Oversee payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and month-end close.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards and government regulations.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis to support sound business decisions.
  • Partner with department managers and the Dealer Principal to improve performance and achieve dealership goals.
  • Mentor and support the accounting team while fostering a positive, collaborative workplace.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA designation an asset, but not required
  • Dealership experience required
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of ASPE and financial reporting
  • Proficiency in dealership management systems (e.g., PBS, Reynolds & Reynolds, CDK) and accounting software
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with cross-functional teams
