What does the term 'Deaf Mute' mean?

The term 'Deaf Mute' historically referred to a person who is deaf and does not speak. Today, this term is considered outdated and potentially offensive, as it does not accurately reflect the abilities or identities of deaf individuals. Many people who are deaf can communicate through sign language, writing, or speech, and prefer to be called 'Deaf' or 'hard of hearing.' It is important to use respectful and current language when referring to members of the Deaf community.
