What You’ll Do
The Fredericksburg Police Department is accepting applications for the position of School Resource Officer. The School Resource Officer (SRO) position is responsible for the prevention, detection, investigation, and prosecution of criminal violations that happen on Fredericksburg City School property or events. Work assignments may consist of:
Law Enforcement and SafetyAs the primary point of contact for handling all calls for service from the school, you will be responsible for coordinating the response of other police resources. Ensuring the safety of school administrators during incidents involving weapons, controlled substances, or risky student behavior is a key duty. You will also provide information on crimes or leads to the appropriate investigative units and stay informed about investigations involving students from the assigned school.
Liaison and CommunicationProvide valuable information to students and school personnel on matters related to law enforcement. Your role requires strict adherence to the guidelines outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Fredericksburg City Public Schools. Additionally, you will stay informed about situations where other law enforcement units have rendered services to the school, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration.
Threat Assessment and Crime PreventionPlay a key role in monitoring students identified as subjects of concern. Your expertise in crime prevention will be instrumental in creating a safer school environment. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with school administrators to
address issues related to school crime and disorder, working in conjunction with other City departments and community resources to implement effective solutions.
Community Engagement and SupportAssist in problem-solving to address school crime in collaboration with community members. Your role will also involve promoting and enriching the lives of youth through law-related teaching and mentoring. It is essential to respect and work effectively with youth, parents, teachers, and school administrators from diverse backgrounds and cultures to create a supportive and inclusive environment.

Minimum Qualifications- VA DCJS Certified law enforcement officer.
- No more than two moving violations within previous 24 months.
- No current or previous revocations of suspension of license within previous 60 months due to a moving violation.
- Undergo a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records inquiries to both the CCRE and FBI.
- Undergo a physical examination, subsequent to a conditional offer of employment.
- Polygraph Examination.
- Must complete Lawfit® course in 1 minute 36 seconds.
