What is a DC power engineer?

DC Power Engineers are specialized electrical engineers who design, implement, and maintain direct current (DC) power systems. These systems are commonly used in telecommunications, data centers, renewable energy installations, and industrial applications. DC Power Engineers ensure reliable and efficient power distribution, manage backup power solutions like batteries, and oversee the safety and compliance of power infrastructure. Their work is essential for supporting critical systems that require uninterrupted, high-quality power.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DC power engineer?

To thrive as a DC Power Engineer, a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, power systems, and relevant academic credentials such as a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is essential. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, power analysis software, and certifications such as IEEE or NETA are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help DC Power Engineers excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable design and maintenance of DC power systems vital for critical infrastructure.

How does a DC power engineer typically collaborate with other teams during large infrastructure projects?

DC Power Engineers often work closely with electrical engineers, project managers, and installation technicians throughout the project lifecycle. They are responsible for designing and specifying DC power systems, reviewing plans with cross-functional teams, and ensuring that installation meets both technical and safety standards. Regular meetings and site visits are common to coordinate activities, troubleshoot issues, and integrate feedback from stakeholders, making strong communication and teamwork skills essential for success in this role.

What is the difference between Dc Power Engineer vs Battery Systems Engineer?

AspectDc Power EngineerBattery Systems Engineer
CertificationsElectrical certifications, PE license often preferredBattery technology certifications, electrical certifications
Work EnvironmentPower plants, data centers, renewable energy sitesBattery manufacturing, energy storage systems, R&D labs
Industry UsagePower distribution, renewable energy, telecomEnergy storage, electric vehicles, portable power

Dc Power Engineers focus on designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting direct current power systems, often in power distribution or renewable energy projects. Battery Systems Engineers specialize in developing and optimizing battery technologies and energy storage solutions. While both roles require electrical expertise and certifications, their work environments and industry applications differ, with Dc Power Engineers more involved in power infrastructure and Battery Systems Engineers in energy storage innovations.

Job description

Join LECO as an Analytical Instrumentation Field Support Engineer

For more than 80 years, LECO has pioneered world-class laboratory instrumentation from our home base in St. Joseph, Michigan. As a family-owned company, we value long-term relationships, trust, and stability—and we extend those values to every customer interaction in the field.

A day in the life

It’s Monday morning. You review your schedule from your home office, confirm spare parts in your trunk stock, and head to a customer site. By mid-morning, you’re troubleshooting a DC power supply issue on an analytical instrument. After lunch, you complete a preventive maintenance checklist and update firmware with the latest upgrade kit. You wrap up the day by training a new user on instrument theory, operation, software navigation, and care. Tomorrow brings an installation at a metallographic lab—and a chance to strengthen another customer relationship.

Role overview
  • Employment type: Full-time, remote, salaried with regular travel.
  • Customer-facing position focused on service at client facilities and relationship building.
  • Primary territory: Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia, with occasional trips to neighboring regions as needed.
  • Travel cadence: Up to 5 days per week, with as many as four overnight hotel stays (Monday–Friday) when required.
  • Ideal home base: Near Louisville, KY.
  • Signing bonus: $5,000.
What you’ll do
  • Deliver preventive and general maintenance, diagnose breakdowns, and implement corrective repairs on analytical and metallographic instruments.
  • Install new systems and apply updates and upgrade kits.
  • Provide end-user training on theory, operation, software, and maintenance best practices.
  • Ensure all service activities align with LECO’s ISO accreditation requirements.
What sets you up for success
  • A self-driven approach with clear, professional written and verbal communication.
  • Professionalism and strict adherence to customer site protocols and safety rules.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to travel daily with up to four overnights per week (Monday–Friday).
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with AC and DC electronics—or a demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
  • Chemistry or military background is a plus, not a requirement.
Training and growth
  • Initial technical training at LECO headquarters in St. Joseph, Michigan for 3–5 months.
  • Field-based onboarding alongside experienced Service Engineers across the country.
  • Annual service training at LECO headquarters to keep your skills current.
Education and pathways

We welcome multiple routes into this role. One or more of the following qualifies you:

  • Two-year technical degree or trade school.
  • Prior military service with technical training.
  • Equivalent technical work experience or training.
Compliance
  • Pass a background check and substance abuse screenings
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without restriction
  • EOE M/F/VET/Disability
